About The Position

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of North Dakota (UND) is seeking an assistant professor of statistics. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position contingent on funding, and the successful candidate will contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as its scholarly and service missions. The Mathematics & Statistics Department, housed in the College of Arts & Sciences, offers degrees in Mathematics and Applied Statistics. The department is one of the largest at UND, with 28 faculty members serving thousands of students annually. Established in 1883, UND is North Dakota's oldest research university, classified as having very high research activity. It offers degrees in over 225 fields and enrolls nearly 16,000 students. UND is located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, a vibrant college town known for its quality of life and cost of living.

Requirements

Earned PhD in Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics (with an emphasis in statistics), or Data Science (with an emphasis in statistics) by August 15, 2027.
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Excellent written and oral communication skills
The ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students
Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
Ability to work with and engage students and colleagues with a broad range of backgrounds within and outside the Department of Mathematics & Statistics
Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery

Nice To Haves

Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels
Experience teaching statistics with a focus on data analysis and data science applications
Experience mentoring students in industrial internships and supervising student projects/independent studies
Evidence of research potential, such as a record of peer-reviewed publications in quality journals
Record of involvement in seeking extramural funding
Experience working on multi-disciplinary research teams

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics
Advise and mentor undergraduate students
Advise and mentor graduate students; direct graduate theses and independent study projects
Establish a productive research program, such as through publication in peer-reviewed outlets and/or seeking extramural funding to support individual and collaborative projects.
Serve as a catalyst for attracting and supporting graduate students in the MS in Applied Statistics Program.
