About The Position

Western Connecticut State University's Macricostas School of Arts & Sciences is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Creative & Professional Writing department. This role will also serve as the Coordinator of Composition and Coordinator of the Writing Center. The Department of Creative and Professional Writing offers undergraduate and graduate programs, including a unique MFA in Creative & Professional Writing. Faculty typically teach twelve credit hours per semester, but the Composition Coordinator receives reassigned time for coordination duties. The successful candidate will teach in and oversee the university's Composition program, including first-year composition, a second-tier composition course, a tutor training course, and teaching-in-the-schools courses. Responsibilities include curriculum development, advising on General Education matters related to Composition, supervising student peer tutors, providing tutoring support, managing the Writing Center space, developing training for instructors and tutors, supervising the embedded tutor program, and ensuring the healthy operation of the Composition Program and Writing Center. Faculty are also expected to maintain an active research program, serve on committees, and advise students.

Requirements

  • Completed terminal degree (Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, English, or Writing, or an MFA in Writing preferred) at the time of application.
  • Evidence of scholarship in Rhetoric and Composition or experience leading a composition program.
  • Experience working in or leading a Writing Center or similar services to provide student learning support in writing.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for first-generation and under-represented groups.
  • Must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background in teaching college composition.

Responsibilities

  • Teach in and oversee the university's Composition program.
