About The Position

The selected candidate will work as a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in the Architecture department specializing in foundational architecture courses that support Architecture program students. The successful applicant will join a robust department where faculty members are reflective practitioners and knowledgeable instructors in architecture. Faculty members at Salt Lake Community College support students seeking to enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college or university by developing and maintaining high-quality, industry-standard curricula that provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in future careers. All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences. Faculty are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students. Placement within the range is based on a review of the candidate’s education and credentials, discipline-specific experience, teaching effectiveness and competencies, and internal equity across rank and department. SLCC’s faculty compensation practices align with institutional policy and support equitable, consistent placement within approved ranges. The base salary is a 9-month Academic Year appointment and paid over annual basis. Additional compensation may be available when teaching overload classes. Summer Semester is paid at 23.5% of base for a full teaching load. Finalist must complete a teaching demonstration and submit recommendation letters. The Passing of a criminal Background check required before offer is extended. Official transcripts required before employment offer. Full-time faculty receive comprehensive benefits. Requirements

  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • All employees are expected to maintain a permanent residence within the State of Utah as a condition of employment.
  • New employees must provide a valid Utah residential address within 30 days of their start date.
  • NAAB Accredited degree (B-Arch, M-Arch or D-Arch)
  • 3 years experience--working under the supervision of a licensed architect

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and teach a combination of traditional lecture/lab, hybrid (on-campus/online), remote broadcast, and/or fully online courses as assigned by the department.
  • Develop and teach foundational architecture courses that support all Architecture program students.
  • Teach an average of 15 instructional units per semester (approximately 18 hours of in-class time per week during Fall and Spring semesters) in the Architecture program within the Architecture department Salt Lake Community College.
  • Teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes in accordance with established guidelines and policies.
  • Participate in advising, committee assignments, academic and institutional support activities, and other duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate course curriculum paperwork, general education 5-year reviews, and adjunct training.
  • Participate in Architecture program curriculum development, annual program assessments, and periodic program reviews in collaboration with other program faculty.
  • Create an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method.
  • Teach courses consistent with department procedures, the appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
  • Provide each student with a syllabus (paper or online) on the first day of class that complies with department procedures and the course CCO.
  • Teach assigned classes during the required contact hours at the scheduled times and places.
  • Demonstrate incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands-on and engaged activities).
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
  • Promote development of critical thinking among students.
  • Actively participate in the update and production of new curriculum development and related activities as a contributing team member of the program area, department, campus, college, and state.
  • Maintain and post current teaching schedule and office hours.
  • Maintain a significant campus presence, responding to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community.
  • Meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week in-person or online (office hours).
  • Be available to teach courses at times directed by academic needs of the program and availability of staffing pool.
  • Return graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
  • Consistently work to improve course quality, design, and course integrity through participation in the college-wide assessment of student learning.
  • Conduct a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
  • Inform students of progress to date periodically and assign and submit grades by published deadlines.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
  • Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Use industry standard resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  • Collaborate with colleagues for instructional improvement.
  • Maintain professional and collegial behavior.
  • Coordinate and supervise internships and clinical experiences for students as assigned.
  • Respond to voicemail and email communication promptly (generally within 1-2 contract days).

  • Partner with the college to provide innovation and improve the student learning environment.
  • Promote support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the college by incorporating culturally-competent pedagogy and inclusive practices.
  • Become familiar with and abide by all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the college.
  • Maintain professional etiquette in communication with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Work closely with department peers and administrators to understand processes and procedures leading to success as a contributing teacher and member of the academic unit.
  • Maintain necessary education, credentials, professional skills, and demonstrated teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
  • Solicit feedback and implement suggestions from students and peers, when appropriate.
  • Expand knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis.
  • Promote professional development of peers/colleagues through recognized professional activities (in-service activities and the presentation of conference papers and/or publications, and other methodologies appropriate to the teaching field), as approved by the department.
  • Participate in the collegial mentoring relationship, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
  • Engage in local, state, and/or national professional organizations appropriate to the faculty role.
  • Serve community partners as content area experts, when needed.
  • Complete required training and participate in professional development.
  • Serve their program, department, school, college, and the larger community by attending both general and discipline-specific forums and meetings.
  • Serve on college and department committees, community committees, engage with the community in multiple roles, and mentor departmental adjunct faculty.

  • Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and campus committee assignments.

  • Know and enforce FERPA guidelines and other pertinent federal regulations.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment.
  • Review and recommend program textbooks and/or materials.
  • Attend Convocation, Professional Development Day, Commencement and other institutional meetings (e.g., department meetings).
  • Handle/respond to student concerns/complaints.
  • Assume an active role in the student advising process, formal, and/or informal, per departmental guidelines.
  • Meet with and update the counseling office; update and maintain advising materials per departmental guidelines.
  • Develop and/or participate in student recruitment and retention strategies. (Career and Majors Fair, Pathways to Professions, high school workshops, program open houses, SkillsUSA, informal outreach, etc.).
  • Assist with assessment of credit for prior learning, as needed (transfer credit, AP course credit, etc.).
  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
  • Evaluate and revise program offerings and course materials on an ongoing basis and develop new curricula, as needed.
  • Participate in strategic planning and monitor the institutional effectiveness and accountability process.
  • Provide leadership and instructional integrity through classroom observation, mentoring, and evaluation of part-time employees or serving on tenure sitting committees as needed.
  • Report maintenance issues for classrooms and equipment to appropriate authorities.
  • Maintain inventory, if appropriate, of equipment, tools, supplies, storage/disposal of hazardous materials required for classes, and request appropriate equipment repair.
  • Actively participate in the informed budget process.
  • Identify budgetary needs and priorities within the program, as applicable.
