About The Position

The Department of Classics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Ancient Greek Literature. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. This position is being advertised concurrently with the Associate Professor – Ancient Greek Literature position (Req 48737); however, only one appointment will be made. To be considered for this role and/or Associate Professor – Ancient Greek Literature (Req 48737) you must submit a separate application for each posting.

Requirements

  • Earned a PhD degree in Classics or a related area by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.
  • Outline a program of rigorous and innovative research at the highest international level backed by a track record commensurate with their career stage.
  • Present clear evidence of a capacity to teach both graduate and undergraduate students at all levels.
  • For undergraduate teaching, this will include translation-based courses in ancient Greek literature, and language courses in ancient Greek.
  • Expertise in at least one other ancient language.
  • Address in their cover letter how they would complement and add value to existing Departmental strengths.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills in their application materials.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving equity, diversity and inclusion within the subject.
  • Evidence of excellence in research may be demonstrated by a record of refereed publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, conference presentations, grants and awards commensurate with career stage, by a research statement showing ambition and innovation, and by strong recommendations by referees of high standing.
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and a teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below).
