About The Position

Summerhill Market is a Toronto boutique grocer known for scratch-made prepared foods, freshly baked treats, and on-trend ingredients. They are looking for an experienced, hands-on Assistant Produce Manager to support the leadership of their Produce Department at the Rosedale location. This role works closely with the Produce Manager to ensure the department runs smoothly each day while maintaining the highest standards of freshness, merchandising, food safety, and customer service. The ideal candidate enjoys leading by example, coaching teams, and thrives in a fast-paced retail environment.

Requirements

  • Previous Produce Department leadership experience in grocery or specialty food retail.
  • Strong knowledge of fresh produce handling, quality standards, merchandising, inventory management, and shrink control.
  • A positive, hands-on leader with the ability to coach, motivate, and support a high-performing team.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically active retail environment while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Passion for fresh food, retail excellence, and creating an exceptional customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Produce Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the Produce Department, ensuring exceptional quality, freshness, merchandising, and customer service.
  • Lead, coach, train, and motivate Produce team members while fostering a positive, productive, and accountable work environment.
  • Assist with ordering, inventory management, receiving, stock replenishment, product rotation (FIFO), and shrink control to maximize sales and minimize waste.
  • Ensure produce displays remain fully stocked, visually appealing, abundant, and maintained to Summerhill Market's merchandising standards throughout the day.
  • Inspect fruits and vegetables daily for quality, freshness, and food safety, removing products that do not meet company standards.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service by assisting customers with product selection, answering product questions, and resolving concerns professionally.
  • Support labour planning, scheduling, opening and closing procedures, and Lead on Duty (LOD) responsibilities as assigned.
  • Maintain compliance with food safety, sanitation, workplace health & safety, and all company policies and procedures.
  • Support seasonal merchandising, promotional displays, inventory counts, and department initiatives that drive sales and profitability.
  • Act as Produce Manager during their absence while providing leadership and direction to the Produce team.
  • Collaborate with Store Leadership and support other Fresh Departments as business needs require.
  • Additional duties as required.
