The Assistant Produce Manager is responsible for promoting excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer-focused behavior with associates. This role involves smiling and greeting customers, answering questions, and resolving customer issues promptly and professionally. The position focuses on continuous improvement in all areas of the department, making changes to ensure progress, and taking customer orders over the phone or in person with a pleasant attitude. The Assistant Produce Manager determines customer needs, creates finished products in a timely fashion, and ensures fresh quality merchandise by using proper product handling techniques. This role also helps control damages and minimize product losses according to company procedures and standards. The Assistant Produce Manager assists the Produce Manager in day-to-day functions of Produce operations, including merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement, and customer service. They perform the duties of the Produce Manager in their absence, develop and implement merchandising plans that meet financial goals, and are knowledgeable about weekly ads and specials to ensure correct pricing and production amounts. This role continuously improves knowledge of produced merchandise and adheres to and enforces company policy of production logs. The Assistant Produce Manager oversees department inventories by tracking weekly sales reports, product orders, and supplies to ensure successful period-end physical inventory. They assist with scheduling all department associates, participate in training, reward and recognize performance, and delegate work assignments to effectively utilize talents and abilities while maximizing profits for the department. This role utilizes the Learning Management System (LMS) for current and new associates, manages inventory levels, and reviews orders to ensure product quantities meet customer demand. The Assistant Produce Manager maintains backroom organization and product storage within company guidelines, oversees shelf replenishment efforts to ensure product availability, and prioritizes weekly specials, seasonal and locally relevant items, and other high-velocity items. They utilize the cutting list for accuracy and variety of product, check and verify all department deliveries and invoices for accurate billing, and may help unload merchandise and transport it to the sales floor or storage area. This role enforces and follows department practices regarding receiving, dating, and restocking to ensure product rotation, monitors product quality and freshness, and breaks down deliveries. The Assistant Produce Manager controls department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, controls labor costs, and reduces losses due to damages, spoiled product, and shrink. They ensure associates correctly follow company recipes for prepared products, maintain freshness by properly removing and recording out-of-code products, and complete required product logs. This role keeps the produce department well-stocked and appealing to meet customer demands, handles special requests such as filling orders for fruit baskets, and resolves customer concerns promptly. The Assistant Produce Manager unpacks cartons and crates of merchandise, cleans and trims produce, and stocks the area with new merchandise. They ensure merchandise is in saleable condition by rotating stock, ensure product has been properly priced with correct signage, and maintain the salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable as needed. This role assists in building attractive displays, accurately completes necessary product logs, and handles spoiled and damaged product, new items, and discontinued items according to company policy. The Assistant Produce Manager maintains backroom and receiving area security and organization by promoting procedures, is responsible for general sanitation in the department, and follows cleaning schedules and department guidelines to ensure work areas, equipment, counters, and display cases are well-maintained, clean, and meet all health and OSHA requirements. They dispose of trash properly and may assist with baling cardboard or other related duties if properly trained. Training is provided. This role ensures the smooth function of the department and store by cooperating with co-workers and superiors and is responsible for continuously improving job performance. They are responsible for the utilization of all company-provided Personal Protected Equipment (PPE), including but not limited to cut-resistant gloves, safety cutters, and company-sponsored footwear. The Assistant Produce Manager may also be called upon to assist in other departments.
