About The Position

The Assistant Produce Manager is responsible for promoting excellent customer relations by instilling positive customer-focused behavior with associates. This includes smiling and greeting customers, answering questions, and resolving customer issues promptly and professionally. The role focuses on continuous improvement in all areas of the department, making changes to ensure progress, and taking customer orders with a pleasant attitude. Key responsibilities include ensuring fresh quality merchandise through proper handling techniques, controlling damages and minimizing product losses, and assisting the Produce Manager with daily operations such as merchandising, ad execution, associate engagement, and customer service. The Assistant Produce Manager will also perform the duties of the Produce Manager in their absence, develop and implement merchandising plans to meet financial goals, and stay knowledgeable about weekly ads and specials for correct pricing and production. Continuous improvement of knowledge regarding produced merchandise and adherence to production log policies are essential. The role involves overseeing department inventories by tracking sales, orders, and supplies, assisting with associate scheduling, training, performance recognition, and delegating work assignments to maximize profits. Utilizing the Learning Management System (LMS) for training, managing inventory levels to meet customer demand, and maintaining backroom organization are also key functions. The Assistant Produce Manager oversees shelf replenishment, prioritizes high-velocity items, and utilizes the cutting list for accuracy. Verification of deliveries and invoices, potential unloading of merchandise, and enforcement of receiving, dating, and restocking procedures are required. Monitoring product quality and freshness, breaking down deliveries, controlling department expenses (labor, damages, spoilage, shrink), and ensuring associates follow company recipes for prepared products are critical. Maintaining freshness by removing and recording out-of-code products, completing product logs, and keeping the department well-stocked and appealing are ongoing tasks. The role also involves handling special requests, unpacking merchandise, cleaning and trimming produce, stocking, ensuring proper pricing and signage, maintaining the salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable sections, assisting with display building, and accurately completing product logs. Handling spoiled/damaged/new/discontinued items according to policy, maintaining backroom and receiving area security, and ensuring general sanitation in the department according to cleaning schedules and health/OSHA requirements are also part of the responsibilities. Proper trash disposal and potential assistance with baling cardboard may be required. Cooperation with co-workers and superiors is expected to ensure the smooth function of the department and store, with a focus on continuous job performance improvement and utilization of company-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The Assistant Produce Manager may also be called upon to assist in other departments.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Minimum (2) years' experience in management in retail/restaurant/supermarket environment.

  • Maintains backroom organization and product storage within company guidelines.
  • Oversees shelf replenishment efforts to ensure product availability for customers, with prioritization for weekly specials, seasonally and locally relevant items, and other high-velocity items.
  • Utilizes cutting list for accuracy and variety of product.
  • Checks and verifies all department deliveries and invoices to ensure accurate billing.
  • May help unload merchandise and transport to sales floor or storage area.
  • Enforces and follows department practices regarding receiving, dating and restocking to ensure product rotation.
  • Monitors product quality and freshness.
  • Breaks down deliveries.
  • Controls department expenses by improving operations and efficiencies, controls labor costs and reduces losses due to damages, spoiled product and shrink.
  • Ensures associates correctly follow company recipes for prepared products.
  • Maintains freshness by properly removing and recording out of code products.

  • Keeps produce department well stocked and appealing to meet customer demands.
  • Smiles and greets customers, answers customer questions, handles special requests such as filling orders for fruit baskets and resolves customer concerns promptly in a polite and professional manner.
  • Unpacks cartons and crates of merchandise, cleans and trims produce, stocks area with new merchandise.
  • Ensures merchandise is in saleable condition which requires rotating stock to ensure freshness.
  • Ensures that product has been properly priced with correct signage.
  • Maintains salad bar and cut fruit/vegetable as needed.
  • Assists in building attractive displays.
  • Accurately completes necessary product logs.
  • Handles spoiled and damaged product, new items and discontinued items accordingly to company policy.
  • Maintains backroom and receiving area security and organization by promoting procedures.
  • Responsible for general sanitation in the department.
  • Follows cleaning schedules and department guidelines to ensure that work areas, equipment, counters, display cases, etc. are well maintained, clean and meet all health and OSHA requirements.
  • Disposes of trash properly.
  • May assist with baling cardboard or other related duties if properly trained.
  • Ensures smooth function of department and store by cooperating with co-workers and superiors.
  • Responsible to continuously improve job performance.
  • Responsible for utilization of all company provided Personal Protected Equipment (PPE).
  • Assists department manager in supervising all associates within the department.
  • May also oversee the Floral department in select stores.
