About The Position

The Assistant Principal supports the overall vision for Bright Star Schools and the school site. The assistant principal supports the implementation of the instructional and cultural vision, school-wide strategic plan including, but not limited to: coordinating assessments, teacher coaching and support, and supporting the principal with all school based needs. As the Assistant Principal is one of the main coaches for teachers, their pedagogical background will be imperative in helping them lead professional development for teachers and meetings with teacher leaders. In addition, this individual plays a major role in establishing and managing the school culture through aligned systems and structures under the umbrellas of MTSS, PBIS, progressive discipline and restorative practices. This equity based leader would also be responsible for oversight of social emotional student learning and non-instructional student programs such as Life Experience Lessons (field trips) and student activities. The Assistant Principal’s primary area of responsibility includes developing relationships with students, families, teachers and colleagues based on mutual respect, integrity and trust, in pursuit of meeting school goals and improving academic outcomes for ALL students. Assistant Principals supervise all individuals who carry out the programs that they are charged to lead.

Requirements

  • Valid, Clear, California Teaching Credential (Single Subject or Multiple Subject Teaching Credential preferred) or P.P.S. Credential
  • At least three years of experience as a teacher lead, instructional coach/mentor, lead counselor, or an administrative role
  • Valid California Administrative credential (or currently enrolled in an administrative credential program)
  • At least four years of teaching or school guidance counseling experience, with a proven record of supporting student achievement and growth
  • Evidence of strong organizational, student management, and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of Google Apps, plus an aptitude for quickly learning and mastering other data-based programs
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to quickly digest and, when needed, create documents for the school community (students, teachers, parents)
  • Ability to analyze complex student data, identify trends, and create action steps that will lead to student growth
  • Understanding of and agreement with our student, parent, and employee expectations
  • Must be able to analyze written, spoken, visual, and other sensory stimuli
  • Must have ability to understand and analyze written and spoken English

Responsibilities

  • Contribute actively to the School Leadership Team (SLT) and network Communities of Practice (COP), aligning work to the strategic plan.
  • Lead and participate in key school site events and meetings (e.g., culture meetings, parent nights, assemblies, attendance meetings).
  • Model humility, openness to feedback, and continuous learning while cultivating a positive, inclusive school climate.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students, families, staff, and the community through compassionate, equity-focused leadership.
  • Manage and develop school site personnel, including Deans, teachers, counselors, and support staff.
  • Hold staff accountable for implementing instructional and cultural priorities while fostering positive, accountable staff culture.
  • Plan and facilitate engaging professional development, support recruitment efforts, and use data (surveys, performance metrics) to drive improvement.
  • Support the Principal by covering absences, coordinating staff fellowship opportunities, and upholding organizational policies.
  • Coach, mentor, and evaluate teachers and leaders, supporting professional growth through feedback, PD, and data-driven goal setting.
  • Oversee instructional planning, assessments (ELPAC, CAASPP, i-Ready, College Board exams), and inclusive education practices.
  • Lead collaborative data conversations to close achievement gaps, strengthen curricula, and ensure effective ELD and SPED supports.
  • Partner with the Principal to align professional development, master scheduling, and instructional goals with school-wide vision.
  • Oversee school-wide culture systems, Restorative Practices, and behavior management to create safe, motivating environments.
  • Develop and grow school culture through proactive initiatives, cultural assemblies, and after-school/field trip programs.
  • Provide supervision for student activities (lunchtime, after-school) and ensure alignment with student/parent handbooks.
  • Support staff growth in fostering a positive culture through training, observation, and feedback cycles.
