About The Position

The Astor Learning Center (ALC), a therapeutic special education school for children facing educational, emotional, and behavioral challenges, is hiring an Assistant Principal to join their supportive and collaborative team. The Assistant Principal supports the success of the school by providing leadership in supervising teachers and teaching assistants in curriculum, units of study, lesson plans, assessment, teaching strategies, and classroom management. In collaboration with the principal, the AP is responsible for the oversight of the curriculum, report cards, state testing, classroom observations, compliance, teacher coaching, supervision, and program Quality Assurance. This role reports directly to the School Principal, works closely with the school leadership team, and may have responsibilities extending beyond the typical school day hours. Requirements

  • NYS School Building Leader Certification.
  • Master's degree in educational leadership or education administration.

  • K-8 Classroom and Curriculum Development Experiencer preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and trains all staff in curriculum, behavior modification classroom techniques, and Individual Education Plans.
  • Assists in interviewing and hiring of Teachers and Teacher Assistants.
  • Assists in creating class lists and schedules.
  • Promote effective communication and positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community members.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team and parents to determine the most suitable school placement for children based on individual needs.
  • Assists in Committee on Special Education district meetings to advocate for most appropriate school placement for children evaluated.
  • Coordinates NYS academic testing.
  • Lesson Plan review and Classroom Observations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and maintain strong moral character in all settings.
  • Demonstrate initiative, proactively identifying needs, solving problems, and taking action to support students, staff, and school operations without requiring direct supervision.
  • Supervises teachers and teaching assistants as directed by the principal, including onboarding and coaching.
  • Respond to emergency situations to ensure safety and appropriate resolution following outlined protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
