About The Position

The Bridgeport Port Jefferson Ferry is seeking a highly experienced Assistant Port Captain to join their team. This role assists with the day-to-day marine operations, including vessel traffic, licensed and unlicensed deck personnel, and facilities to ensure port operations reliability and efficiency. The Assistant Port Captain will perform the duties of the Port Captain in their absence, maintain proficiency in the wheelhouse, log trips, and supervise dock workers to ensure safe embarkation and debarkation activities. This position is involved in Safety Management, scheduling crew training, enforcing safety compliance, and serving as the first point of contact for dock department issues. The role also involves tracking crew licensing, ensuring compliance with all local and federal laws and regulations, interacting with regulatory agencies, attending industry conferences, and utilizing Microsoft Office Suite and payroll systems. The Assistant Port Captain may be required to act as Facility Security Officer, maintain the Facility Security Plan, and operate a forklift as needed. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Current U.S. Coast Guard license as Master with appropriate tonnage rating and radar endorsement.
  • Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential, any rating.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
  • Current First Aid/CPR and Firefighting training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Pass pre-employment physical.
  • Minimum one year serving as Master or Mate.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the duties and responsibilities for the Port Captain in their absence.
  • Maintain proficiency in the wheelhouse and log trips made on the boats.
  • Supervise the Dock Workers and ensure embarkation and debarkation activities are carried out without incident.
  • Involved in Safety Management.
  • Schedule all crew members for all required safety and security training.
  • Enforce compliance of crew in accordance with all applicable safety rules, regulations, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for issues relating to the dock department.
  • Track crew licensing requirements.
  • Ensure that all ferry and operations comply with all local and federal laws and regulations.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies and civil authorities to keep vessels and personnel in compliance with all know regulations.
  • Attend industry conferences as required.
  • Utilize Microsoft word, excel, payroll system and email programs.
  • May be required to act as Facility Security Officer.
  • Maintain Facility Security Plan.
  • Operate the Forklift as needed.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
