About The Position

The Writing Program in the Emory College of Arts & Sciences is seeking colleagues with a preferred specialization in Composition, Rhetoric, and Writing to join their interdisciplinary team of teaching-track faculty. The successful candidate will be prepared to serve as the Director of First-Year Writing (FYW), overseeing a program that serves approximately 800 undergraduates annually. Responsibilities include training and mentoring instructors, supporting students, developing and assessing curriculum, and running continuing education for writing instructors. The role also involves collaborating on a writing pedagogy practicum for graduate students. The position is a career track appointment with multi-year contracts, full faculty benefits, and opportunities for promotion and administrative leadership. The standard course assignment is 3/2, with writing-intensive courses capped at 16 students. Faculty in administrative roles typically have a reduced teaching load. Teaching-track faculty have consistent access to funding and resources for teaching, research, and professional development. The salary is competitive and depends on qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  • PhD specializing in composition and rhetoric, writing studies, or related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in scholarship and pedagogies related to FYW.
  • Leadership experience at the program, department, college, or university level.
  • Experience in writing program administration (especially preferred).
  • Experience or interest in teaching, mentorship, and/or research in critical data literacies, technical or quantitative communication, and digital rhetorics.
  • Teaching experience in first-year writing and other levels of university writing.
  • Experience working with faculty and students across disciplinary backgrounds.
  • Experience working with a range of student populations using pedagogical approaches that emphasize inclusion and belonging and cultural responsiveness.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with accessible pedagogies and practices and/or universal design for learning.
  • Familiarity with the educational needs of students who are multilingual and/or from historically underrepresented groups.
  • Engagement with critical and/or justice-oriented pedagogical and methodological approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Director of First-Year Writing (FYW).

  • Support prospective and enrolled students.
  • Develop and assess curriculum for First-Year Writing.
  • Run continuing education for writing instructors.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and teach a writing pedagogy practicum for graduate student instructors.
  • Teach courses such as First-Year Writing, Technical Communication, and courses within the Rhetoric, Writing, and Information Design (RWID) minor.
  • Develop and teach courses based on their own expertise.
