About The Position

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor specializing in AI Ethics and AI Safety. This role involves maintaining an active research program with a focus on normative and conceptual engagement with artificial intelligence, ideally with technical literacy in AI developments. The successful candidate will teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) major and the new BA in Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI), develop new AI-related offerings, and participate in departmental and university service. The position is a collaboration between the Department of Philosophy and AIM, the Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Institute at Maryland, which serves as a campus-wide hub for interdisciplinary AI research and education, with a commitment to responsible and ethical AI.

Requirements

Ph.D. or equivalent in Philosophy or related field by the time of appointment.
2 years of research in A.I. Ethics or A.I. Safety as primary areas of focus.
Some prior teaching experience at the university level.

Responsibilities

Maintain an active, innovative research program involving sustained normative and conceptual engagement with artificial intelligence.

Help develop further undergraduate and graduate offerings at the intersection of philosophy and AI.
