Requirements

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have successfully completed one year of at least high school level Mathematics which include fundamentals of Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry, (Official documentation must be supplied with the job bid) Must have received a grade of a "C" or better in required courses.
  • Must obtain an evaluation of 'Recommended' on the Construction Aptitude Skills Test (CAST). (Exception: if you are incumbent and/or changing location, or have previously taken and passed the CAST test)
  • Must be physically capable of handling equipment such as high voltage fuses, draw out switchgear, flexible jumpers and ladders.
  • Must be able to lift and carry substation materials and equipment weighing up to at least 50 pounds
  • Satisfactory physical examination, including vision and hearing
  • Must work shifts, on call, and overtime assigned
  • Must be able to work in all inclement weather
  • Must have a valid driver's license and provide vehicle for travel on company time.
  • Must satisfactorily complete the substation field training program in order for advancement to the Reserve Operator classification.

Nice To Haves

  • An associate’s degree in electrical engineering or engineering technology from a recognized college or university
  • Satisfactory completion of two years of a four-year Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Courses should include basic electrical power equipment and controls concepts/theory, electronics design concepts/theory, PC applications, and other related electrical applications and concepts. (Documentation of courses and/or curriculum will be required prior to final selection.)

Responsibilities

  • Performs the assigned maintenance and cleaning of station and substation property.
  • Assists with substation and station inspections and reports conditions to the organizational unit operating authority.
  • Reviews and studies technical prints, attends formal training classes, learns the operation of stations and substations, and gains knowledge of relay applications.
  • Receives training and progressively learns to perform the duties of a Reserve Substation Operator.
  • May provide assistance or support to Power Equipment Relay Test (PERT) and Electrical Maintenance Journeyman (EMJ) teams with field training as needed.
