About The Position

In collaboration with the nurse manager, this role supervises staff and unit operations and provides direct patient care. The Assistant Nursing Manager ensures the delivery of safe and quality patient care by supervising the care provided by staff and maintaining professional nursing practice standards. This role involves high visibility to patients, families, and staff, primarily on off-shifts, and includes problem resolution. Responsibilities encompass a variety of administrative, human resource, payroll, quality improvement, and unit coordination activities. The position requires serving in a direct patient care role for more than 50% of the time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
  • Two (2) years of RN experience in a related area of nursing.
  • Holds a current RN compact/multistate license recognized by the NCSBN Compact State or is licensed to practice as an RN in the state the team member is working.
  • Team members working in Critical Care Transport are required to have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Nice To Haves

  • Management/supervisory experience preferred.
  • Certified in nursing specialty preferred.
  • In lieu of the BSN requirement, a nursing diploma or an Associate's Degree in Nursing may be considered if the applicant signs a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to enroll in an accredited BSN or MSN program within one year and obtain a BSN or MSN degree within four years.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees patient care activities in a charge nurse capacity, ensuring safe and quality patient care.
  • Manages staff allocation and scheduling, and patient assignments.
  • Conducts rounds, investigates and resolves patient care issues.
  • Coordinates admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Ensures appropriate transitions of care between shifts and interdepartmental coordination.
  • Provides direct patient care consistent with charge nurse/clinical registered nurse accountabilities.
  • Maintains clinical competencies.
  • Performs patient experience activities, including role modeling, staff mentoring/coaching, patient rounds, service recovery, and problem resolution.
  • Assists with staff development, focusing on clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Collaborates with clinical nurse educators to support new staff orientation and training.
  • Maintains records for staff competencies, certifications, and/or licenses.
  • Serves as a professional role model, coach, and resource for employees.
  • Performs administrative and quality management activities to ensure quality expectations and regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ensures unit compliance with departmental, Prisma Health, safety, regulatory, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Maintains records for regulatory/environmental standards, quality audits, and other unit-related record-keeping.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in preparing for Joint Commission visits.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager on human resources activities, including interviewing, hiring, evaluating, coaching, counseling, staff rounding, and performance management.
  • May assist with payroll processing.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in maintaining unit budget through appropriate allocation and utilization of resources.
  • Shares accountability with Nurse Manager for unit/department/organizational goal achievement.
  • Assists in planning, directing, and evaluating short-term and long-term unit projects.
  • Develops, submits, implements, and evaluates performance objectives for self and unit.
  • Works with healthcare team members on activities to improve patient care outcomes.
  • Participates in Nursing and/or hospital committees and work groups as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
