About The Position

The Iowa River Landing Clinic is seeking a 100%25 Assistant Nurse Manager to support approximately 80 reports. The Assistant Nurse Manager provides managerial and clinical leadership to outpatient units to assure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods, and resources to accomplish their performance objectives. This role manages direct care nursing functions to assure that health services, medical care, medical/health professions education, and evidence-based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have limited involvement in direct patient care responsibilities because they will focus their efforts in planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, including clinical education programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or related field is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • 1-3 years current experience in a leadership and/or management role.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to serve as a liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and other customers.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, decision making, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs).

Nice To Haves

  • Recent (within the last 3 years) experience in an outpatient clinical setting.
  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Experience managing in an outpatient setting or in a procedural unit.
  • Proven ability to work independently, using discretionary judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations.
  • Develop and manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by Nurse Manager.
  • Assists in matters of promotion, transfers and disciplinary action, as directed by Nurse Manager.
  • Coaches staff to participate in team decision-making and actively seeks participation from assigned staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities.
  • Provides staff incentives/rewards for contributions towards achievement of service excellence.
  • Completes staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with written, solid justification.
  • Assure staff members are compliant with competencies, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts.
  • Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment and retention of qualified staff.
  • Ensures that all employees are treated with respect and in a manner consistent with University policies related to equal employment opportunity.
  • Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and expectations.
  • Actively help manage operating expenses for the Procedure and Infusion Suite by monitoring the unit/clinic’s operating budget.
  • Recommend budget ideas, resources and cost containment strategies through participation in the development of the unit operating budget, reviewing staffing plan, reviewing service contracts, planning for new supply costs, etc.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in developing a staffing plan and is open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Management Team to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement.
  • Supply and Instrumentation management.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Excellence to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Implement and maintain standards and quality plans.
  • Identifies inefficiencies in current practice/processes, demonstrates tolerance for change and develops a means to enhance the process.
  • Consistently makes sound judgments after gathering factual, objective information.
  • Creates and maintains a workplace of choice/ which motivates employees to work at optimal efficiency; encourages staff to regularly establish goals and objectives toward career development.
  • Engage staff in meeting plan goals.
  • Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit to maximize customer service and continuity of care.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager in developing flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Serve as a resource for patient care problems.
  • May provide some patient care.
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and other hospital departments.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Management Team to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans.
  • Uses customer feedback in planning and providing service.
  • Communicate with physicians, staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic.
  • Communicate with patients, families, and staff to address and resolve issues.
  • Utilizes human resources data and budgetary information to formulate recommendation to Nurse Manager and Director or Clinical Services.
  • Work directly with vendors to build and maintain relationships.
  • Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students.
  • Coaches the staff in implementation of standards of care, professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies (i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as appropriate)
  • Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences.
  • Invests in own continuous learning and skill enhancement.
  • Support unit evidence-based practice research initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management and evidence-based practices in nursing care.
  • Supports changes in nursing care using evidence-based practice.
