About The Position

This position exists to provide supervision, clinical/administrative nursing consultation, and direction to registered nurses and nursing assistive personnel on the assigned shift to assure the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process per the nursing and hospital-wide standards. Responsible for maintaining safe, adequate coverage for the inpatient units on the assigned shift. Serves as a resource or guide by advising others on how to use processes within a system or as a member of a collaborative problem-solving team. The Colorado Mental Health Hospital at Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is one of two state hospitals serving our community. The vision of CMHHIFL is to provide the highest quality mental health services to persons with complex, serious, and persistent mental illness within the resources available. Our mission is to support those individuals in achieving their recovery goals and reaching their full potential. CMHHIFL provides inpatient treatment to adult patients, generally between the ages of 18-59. The hospital currently has 138 adult inpatient beds, over six treatment milieus serving civil and forensic individuals. Medical services, occupational therapy, neuropsychological-rehabilitation services, and trauma-informed care services are available for all patients throughout the hospital. Requirements

  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates patient care in collaboration with nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • Directs and consults with other RN III’s and subordinate staff in their provision of patient care.
  • Provides support for the delivery of patient care and provides clinical leadership.
  • Assures the provision of adequate staff coverage across the hospital on off-hour shifts.
  • Makes frequent rounds to each of the inpatient units and dining areas.
  • Covers on units when necessary.
  • Reassigns staff to other units when the situation dictates.
  • Obtains coverage for call-offs or when additional staffing is required due to acuity.
  • Communicates with multiple departments, such as dietary, operator, lab, hospital security, and housekeeping.
  • Functions as a liaison between off-hour nursing staff and nursing service administration and communicates incidents, injuries, and critical incidents to nursing and hospital administration.
  • Participates in staff meetings and hospital/nursing committees.
  • Assists staff in handling complications about off-hour admissions.
  • May escort patients to activities and appointments on the grounds and in the community, including driving patients to appointments.
  • Assumes responsibility for paperwork, assuring confidentiality.
  • Promotes staff development and training at shift level by supporting staff compliance with hospital-wide mandatory training, (i.e., CPR, infection control, safety, medication review, and seclusion/restraint), attending Code Blue events and drills, fire drills, and in-services.
  • Assures ongoing assessment of staff training needs and provides in-the-moment training as needed.
  • Coordinates with Nurse Managers to provide employee orientation to new staff.
  • Provides direct supervision for 4-8 internal float pool staff.
  • Participates in job interviews and provides input into decisions about hiring staff.
  • Monitors for compliance with standards of nursing practice and standards of patient care.
  • Monitors staff performance, coaching and counseling, and performance management reviews.
  • Assumes leadership role in crises.
  • Responds immediately to all psychiatric and medical emergencies, i.e., Code Blue, accidents, injuries, fires, and all other disasters.
  • Proactively identifies the potential impact of non-routine or non-predictable events on the usual routine, i.e., suicide attempts, serious assaults, admissions, or discharges, and makes changes to address these events safely and appropriately.
  • Oversees the utilization and appropriate implementation of seclusion/restraint, emergency medications, etc.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of incidents, injuries, etc.
  • Assists staff in handling angry or impaired visitors.
  • Monitors for quality care, assuring the delivery of patient care according to nursing, hospital, and accreditation standards.
  • Completes specific quality improvement monitors/audits for the Nursing Service office.
  • Keeps staff informed of changes in hospital and division policies.
  • Ensures iNotify documentation is completed and documentation of the incident is in the patient’s medical records as needed.
  • Transcribes physician’s orders, gives shift reports, and charts medication and their effectiveness when providing coverage on the team.
  • Completes the Off-hour Nursing Supervision report for each shift worked, assuring that the report is sent to Hospital Management and other staff, as indicated.
  • Maintains updated skills, knowledge, abilities, and competencies necessary to the position through continuing education, clinical supervision, clinical/administrative supervision, and literature review to ensure that nursing practice is evidence-based, best practice, and within the standards of professional nursing practice.
  • May need to cover for nurses on treatment teams.
  • Other duties as assigned for this position.
