About The Position

The 6300 Medical-Surgical Unit at TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital is a 41-bed unit that specializes in the care of orthopedic, neurosurgery, and trauma patients. Our diverse patient population includes individuals recovering from total joint replacements—such as knee, hip, and shoulder—as well as those with hip fractures or requiring spinal surgery. This fast-paced unit offers a supportive environment for role transition students, nursing students, and new graduates to thrive and grow, with a focus on teamwork, communication, and delivering high-quality patient care. Nurses here have the opportunity to refine their skills in areas such as managing pre- and post-operative care, pain management, patient mobility, and neurovascular assessments. Our team also handles orthopedic-specific interventions, including the use of splints, Buck’s traction, skeletal traction, and specialized durable medical equipment (DME). We take pride in our commitment to professional development and are affiliated with leading organizations such as the ANCC, ANA, the National Association of Orthopedic Nurses, and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses. Nurses can further advance their expertise through certifications such as MED-SURG, GERO-BC, ONC, Pain Certification, and CNRN. The 6300 unit is an ideal place to develop specialized clinical skills, while working in a collaborative and compassionate environment that prioritizes patient-centered care. Under the direction of and in collaboration with the nurse manager, has 24-hour accountability for their area(s) of responsibility. This accountability encompasses: patient care outcomes, service excellence, human resource issues, fiscal management, quality improvement compliance, and communication. Emphasis should be placed on creating a positive environment that fosters professional growth and retention. This environment is supported by the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) acting as a role model and as a mentor and coach to the staff. Direct Report FTEs = 10-19

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required
  • Certification within specialty area within two years of assuming position (required)
  • Registered Nurse license required
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of acute care nursing experience required

Nice To Haves

  • Membership in related professional organization preferred
  • 1-2 years' experience Progressive Leadership Nursing preferred

Responsibilities

  • Supports delivery of quality patient care to achieve desired outcomes and participates in developing and revising unit policies and procedures.
  • Serves as a clinical and administrative resource to staff; collaborates with physicians and the healthcare team to plan, organize, and evaluate care.
  • Assists with overall nursing operations, including annual planning, coordinating patient care during assigned shifts, and managing the unit in the nurse manager’s absence.
  • Participates in staffing efforts including interviewing, hiring, orienting, and retaining employees; applies progressive discipline when needed.
  • Creates and maintains a supportive work environment that promotes engagement and retention.
  • Supports staff development by identifying educational opportunities, collaborating with nurse educators, mentoring employees, and providing ongoing performance feedback.
