About The Position

Under the leadership of the Surgical Services Clinical Director, the assistant director collaborates with the Director, Supervisors, and Charge Nurses in planning, goal setting, developing department budgets, coordinating supplies/equipment, and staffing (e.g., recruitment/retention). They coordinate with Educational Services in staff orientation, training/education, and care/service to carry out the department’s responsibilities efficiently and effectively, in conjunction with and in support of Community Hospital’s strategic plan. As necessary, in the absence of the Surgical Services Clinical Director, they interface with the Coordinator for Cardiothoracic/Vascular Surgery in prioritizing tasks relative to staffing concerns and/or problems. The assistant director is responsible and accountable, twenty-four hours a day, for assigned tasks such as supervising the department’s operations, including but not limited to, being a resource and role model to staff for problem resolution with concerns/occurrences specific to patient care, participating in direct patient care service delivery, safety awareness, supplies, equipment, computer software applications, and customer service concerns. The assistant director ensures staff have the appropriate orientation/training and competence levels for the care/service provided and that all staff adhere to all Montage Health Values standards. This expectation is achieved through supportive training, coaching, developing, evaluating staff performance, policy/procedure enforcement, and counseling/corrective action, if necessary. The assistant director plays a crucial role in supporting quality performance initiatives through ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, collection and analysis of quality and performance improvement data, assisting with development of future performance improvement objectives and quality initiatives, and development or revision of department policies and procedures, as needed. The assistant director supports financial viability with attention to expenses (e.g., supplies and inventory), revenue, utilization, and productivity in assigned cost centers and tactical execution of Lean concepts. Direct reports include charge nurses, staff nurses, ancillary and support staff, and Sterile Processing Technicians. As a member of the Nursing Leadership Team, they work closely with other department (internal and external) managers on the day-to-day tasks of various system(s) efficiencies and effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Qualified by education and experience in the care of the perioperative patient.
  • At least 5 years current experience as a perioperative RN in an acute care hospital operating room or multidisciplinary ambulatory surgery center.
  • Demonstrate capabilities, competencies, and education in the formulation of individual perioperative treatment plans and in providing skilled intraoperative nursing care.
  • Demonstrate ability to direct, monitor, and evaluate nursing care provided by nursing staff.
  • Previous Charge RN or related management experience is required.
  • State of CA RN license required.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.
  • ACLS certification must be obtained prior to completion of orientation and independent assignment.

Nice To Haves

  • Current knowledge and experience with sterile processing standards and regulations preferred.
  • BSN/MSN preferred.
  • CNOR certification is preferred upon hire and required within 18 months of start date.
