About The Position

Plans, implements, and oversees conservation and land stewardship initiatives while serving as a working supervisor. This role involves assisting with the supervision, coordination, and implementation of natural resources/land stewardship work programs and special assignments. The Assistant Natural Resources Manager will regularly report progress to their supervisor, coordinate and conduct land stewardship activities, identify and control exotic and invasive species, and recommend management activities. They will also train staff and volunteers, conduct environmental inventories, collect historical information for management plans, assist with budgeting and monitoring project costs, determine necessary materials and equipment for restoration projects, and oversee contract work. The position requires maintaining written records and reports, using appropriate personal protective equipment and safety protocols, and operating various tools and vehicles. Additionally, the role involves assisting with conservation, surveys, wildlife and water resources management, planning and presenting public education programs, and assisting with employee/volunteer supervision and reviews. Accurate record-keeping of tasks performed is essential.

  • At least a two (2) year degree from an accredited college or technical school in Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, Conservation, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field; or like experience and four (4) years related land stewardship experience with a park, natural resource conservation agency or closely related private sector employer.
  • At least two (2) years prior experience as a proven effective supervisor and must have the ability to effectively motivate assigned subordinates.
  • Experience in and working knowledge of common conservation, land management, and stewardship activities and equipment.
  • Possession of a valid Ohio Department of Agriculture Certified Pesticide Applicator License allowing utilization of restricted-use pesticides/herbicides for forest pest control required at the time of employment, or before completion of the first four months of employment and thereafter is required.
  • A valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle record allowing insurability by the park district’s current vehicle insurance carrier under existing coverage provisions at the time of employment and thereafter is required.
  • Candidates for employment may not have more than 4 total points (or equivalent penalty) issued by a recognized licensing authority for driving-related violations on their driving record at the time of employment under existing coverage provisions at the time of employment.
  • No history of felony convictions.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with supervision, coordination and/or implementation of natural resources/land stewardship work program and/or special assignments.
  • Regularly reports progress to supervisor.
  • Coordinates, conducts, and serves as a working supervisor of land stewardship activities.
  • Identifies exotic and invasive plant and animal species and assists in developing plans and techniques and carries out the control or eradication of same.
  • Recommends and coordinates management activities.
  • Trains other staff and volunteers in proper land stewardship techniques.
  • Conducts environmental inventories and collects historical information in the field and from other sources for use in development of natural resources management plans for specific park properties.
  • Assists with researching potential costs and revenues, assists with budgets and monitoring same for specific projects, activities, or for general operation of assigned properties.
  • Determines materials, equipment, and methods needed to implement natural resources restoration projects and other vegetation management projects.
  • Oversees and performs quality checks on all contract work performed in project areas.
  • Keeps written records, inventories, and makes written reports as required and/or assigned.
  • Uses proper personal protective equipment, follows safety protocols, and uses tools and equipment appropriately to ensure the safety of themselves and others.
  • Immediately reports safety concerns.
  • Regularly uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operates licensed and non-licensed motor vehicles.
  • Assists with planning, supervising, coordinating and/or performing conservation, plant and animal surveys, wildlife management, water resources management, and land stewardship activities in assigned areas.
  • Plans, organizes, and presents public education programs, public programming, and special events as assigned.
  • Assists with annual reviews, corrective guidance, scheduling and supervising of other employees, and/or volunteers assigned to stewardship activities.
  • Maintains accurate records of tasks performed including but not limited to time sheets, vehicle mileage, equipment usage, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
