About The Position

92NY School Engagement in the Arts provides arts residencies, performances, and learning experiences to thousands of K-12 students and educators across New York City annually. This assistant role is designed for early-career music educators seeking to enhance their teaching skills while collaborating with experienced 92NY Teaching Artists. Assistants will aid with music activities, small-group instruction, materials management, classroom engagement, and inclusive teaching practices under the supervision of Lead Teaching Artists. This position also acts as a professional development opportunity for future Lead Teaching Artist roles. Assignments may occur in Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan, with a preference for candidates available to teach in Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music, Music Performance, or a related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience teaching, assisting, or supporting music education programs preferred.
  • Interest in developing as a music educator or teaching artist.
  • Foundational knowledge of elementary music education, rhythm, percussion, singing, or creative music-making.
  • Experience working with children or youth in schools, camps, community programs, or similar settings.
  • Willingness to support students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organization, and classroom support skills.
  • Ability to receive feedback and grow through coaching and mentorship.
  • Current fingerprint clearance through the New York City and New York State Departments of Education preferred.
  • Spanish language proficiency and/or experience working with multilingual learners preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support Lead Teaching Artists during weekly music residency sessions in NYC public schools.
  • Assist with music activities using singing, movement, percussion, instrument exploration, and collaborative music-making.
  • Help with small-group instruction, materials setup, modeling activities, and individual student support.
  • Support classroom engagement and help maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Adapt activities in collaboration with Lead Teaching Artists and school staff to support students with diverse learning needs.
  • Gradually lead portions of lessons under the guidance of Lead Teaching Artists.
  • Participate in required trainings, mentorship, curriculum meetings, planning meetings, and professional development.
  • Communicate consistently with 92NY staff, Lead Teaching Artists, classroom teachers, and school partners.
  • Arrive prepared and complete required program documentation as requested by 92NY.

  • Compensation of $50 per class period.
