About The Position

The Assistant Mountain Manager at Schuss supports the daily operation of the ski area with a strong focus on safety, guest service, employee coordination, and operational efficiency. This position works closely with the Mountain Manager to oversee mountain operations, including ski lifts, trails, equipment, staffing, guest services, and facility readiness. The Assistant Mountain Manager helps ensure employees are prepared to perform their responsibilities safely and effectively while maintaining a positive experience for guests. This is a hands-on operational position that requires working outdoors in changing weather conditions, around heavy equipment, and at heights as part of ski lift and mountain operations. The role also includes administrative responsibilities such as documentation, scheduling, communication, and coordination with other resort departments. Success in this position requires strong leadership, sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, communication skills, and the ability to respond effectively to changing mountain conditions and operational needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience in hospitality, recreation, outdoor operations, or a related environment.
  • Working knowledge of workplace safety practices and operational procedures.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hands-on operational environment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing and potentially severe weather conditions.
  • Ability and willingness to work at heights and in elevated locations as required by mountain and ski lift operations.
  • Ability to work around and operate equipment safely.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on business, weather, and operational needs, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Nice To Haves

  • Two to three years of relevant ski area, mountain operations, or outdoor recreation experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management, Recreation Management, Business, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in ski resort or mountain operations.
  • Experience with chairlift operations and auxiliary power units (APUs).
  • Working knowledge of ANSI B77 standards and ski lift safety requirements.
  • Experience operating snowcats, heavy equipment, or other mountain operations equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and experience troubleshooting or working with mechanical equipment.
  • Previous experience supervising seasonal employees.
  • Experience with administrative responsibilities such as scheduling, documentation, reporting, and employee communication.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily management and coordination of mountain operations.
  • Support operations involving ski lifts, trails, guest services, equipment, and mountain facilities.
  • Coordinate and supervise employees to support efficient operations and a high level of guest service.
  • Help ensure employees understand and follow established safety procedures and operational expectations.
  • Assist with ski lift operations and respond to operational needs involving chairlifts and related equipment.
  • Support the safe operation of snowcats, heavy equipment, and other equipment used in mountain operations.
  • Monitor mountain operations and respond to changing weather, trail conditions, staffing needs, safety concerns, and guest issues.
  • Assist with employee training, coaching, scheduling, and performance expectations.
  • Work closely with the Mountain Manager to identify and address operational and maintenance needs.
  • Perform duties at heights and in elevated locations as required to support ski lift and mountain operations.
  • Follow established safety procedures when working at heights, around ski lifts, and near mountain equipment.
  • Assist with basic troubleshooting and coordination of equipment or mechanical issues.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of special events and mountain activities.
  • Complete required documentation, reports, schedules, and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with other resort departments to support effective communication and smooth resort operations.
  • Help maintain a safe, professional, and positive work environment.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and operational incidents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business and operational needs.
