About The Position

The job of Assistant Coach is done for the purpose(s) of assisting the designing and implementing of the athletic program for the assigned sport in accordance with the applicable rules and regulations. This role involves providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program, serving as a positive role model to student athletes, and representing the Chillicothe R-II School District in a well-respected manner. The assistant coach is also expected to upgrade their knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.

Requirements

  • Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport is desired.
  • Has knowledge and background in the assigned sport.
  • Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.
  • First aid and CPR training required.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and implementing the athletic program for the assigned sport.
  • Provide supervision of students during all aspects of the program.
  • Serve as a positive role model to student athletes.
  • Represent the Chillicothe R-II School District in a well-respected manner.
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
  • Implement athletic policies approved by MSHSAA and the Chillicothe R-II School District.
  • Understand and follow the administrative chain of command.
  • Maintain discipline and foster morale and cooperation within the sports program.
  • Adhere to MSHSAA, league, and sport rules, ensuring equal opportunities.
  • Perform duties assigned by the head coach.
  • Attend in-district meetings and sports-related clinics.
  • Attend and subscribe to professional organizations.
  • Demonstrate character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Give constant attention to student athletes' grades and conduct.
  • Be present at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Teach basic techniques and organize time effectively.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant.
  • Communicate training rules and sport-specific regulations to athletes.
  • Understand policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline and contact parents when necessary.
  • Foster a desire to win, good sportsmanship, personal pride, and school/community pride.
  • Show enthusiasm and maintain a good rapport with students.
  • Use ethical means of motivation.
  • Serve as an exemplary professional.
  • Collect costs for lost or unreturned equipment.
  • Arrange for issuing and storing of equipment and submit inventory to the head coach.
  • Recommend budgetary items to the head coach.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices.
  • Permit athletes in authorized areas only at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms for cleanliness before and after practices/games.
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure building facilities before leaving if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property in players.
  • Assist the head coach with instructing players on rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques.
  • Assess player skills, monitor players during competition and practice, and inform the head coach of athletic performance.
  • Maintain a record of team statistics and lettering requirements.
  • Work within the head coach's framework and philosophy and assist with game strategy.
  • Supervise athletes during practices and competition.
  • Attend all staff meetings and carry out scouting assignments.
  • Model sport-like behavior and maintain appropriate conduct.
  • Arrive 15 minutes before practices, contests, and meetings to prepare and remain afterward.
  • Help plan and implement in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Never criticize the head coach or staff in front of players or parents.
  • Never leave practices, games, or contests until the last student has left.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the head coach.
  • Maintain appropriate rapport with players' parents.
  • Maintain a positive relationship with the community.
  • Cooperate with media personnel.
  • Assume responsibility for pre-game duties and arrive on time for meetings.
  • Maintain self-control and provide an example of sportsmanlike conduct.
  • Accept responsibility for game outcomes.
  • Remain after contests to help finish tasks.
  • Be supportive of the program and cooperative with the head coach and other assistants.
  • Be enthusiastic for the sport.
  • Administer disciplinary action firmly, fairly, and consistently.
