About The Position

Colby College, a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), offers 32 intercollegiate sports at the Division III level, alongside a robust campus recreation program. With over one-third of its 2,200 students participating in intercollegiate sports and nearly three-quarters involved in fitness and recreation, Colby boasts state-of-the-art athletics facilities. The department is seeking an assistant men’s basketball coach for the period of July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. This role involves assisting the head coach in all aspects of running a competitive Division III program.

Requirements

  • Ability to travel for team practices, competition, and scouting in and out of state
  • Valid driver’s license required and must meet the College’s Fleet Safety Policy requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience
  • Previous experience coaching and/or competing at the collegiate level is highly desirable
  • Ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality with regard to employee data, documents, issues, etc., and respect privacy needs of employees and past employees with regard to the same
  • Ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
  • Must be able to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in situations where individuals express opinions or exhibit strong emotions
  • Frequently required to move around the office space as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of the campus facilities
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
  • Mental ability to shift focus quickly due to interruptions; must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasks
  • Frequent travel and early morning/evening/weekend work is required

Responsibilities

  • On-site coaching in games and practices, including organization and implementation of daily practices
  • Prepare film breakdown and analysis, and present analysis to team members
  • Plan and prepare for games
  • Provide support and encouragement to student athletes, including academic counseling and advising
  • Monitor academic progress of athletes
  • Recruit and retain talented athletes successfully
  • Research academic and athletic credentials
  • Build relationships with prospective student athletes and their families through email, phone calls, and one-on-one meetings
  • Organize and implement recruit visits
  • Understand NCAA rules, compliance, and laws
  • Ensure safety and well-being of student athletes
  • Serve as an effective role model for College age students
  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the program
  • Provide effective communication to the head coach
  • Collaborate effectively with other Department of Athletics’ team members
  • Assist with the coordination of team travel
  • Position will have a secondary assignment within the department
