About The Position

The Assistant Manager plays a crucial role in supporting the General Manager (GM) in the daily operations of the fitness club. This position is responsible for assisting in the planning and implementation of strategies to attract and retain members, ensuring a positive club culture aligned with Excel Core Values. Key duties include managing the hiring process, training and developing staff, monitoring performance, ensuring facility cleanliness and maintenance, managing inventory, and supporting marketing efforts. The Assistant Manager also assists with scheduling, payroll verification, policy enforcement, and representing the company in the community.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • HS diploma or equivalent required.
  • CPR/AED certification required (uncertified players have 30 days to complete).
  • Proven ability to lead, encourage, develop, and supervise the work of others.
  • Familiarity with Excel mission, values, vision, and culture.
  • Familiarity with the Planet Fitness brand and operational requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability, confidence, and leadership to manage a team.
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers.
  • Must be team-oriented, motivated, and well-organized.
  • Ability to think critically and evaluate solutions to problems proactively.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations and deal with sensitive and highly confidential information.
  • Basic understanding in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with DataTrak, Workday, Service Channel, and other related applications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist GM in planning and implementing strategies to attract and retain members.
  • Manage the hiring process, including selecting candidates, interviewing, and ensuring onboarding documentation is complete.
  • Train and develop new team members, ensuring they stay up-to-date on certifications and training requirements.
  • Counsel and discipline team member performance.
  • Supervise, inspire, motivate, and coach staff to perform to their best abilities.
  • Support GM with monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPI) goals and metrics for the club.
  • Ensure a clean facility with a great atmosphere and world-class member service.
  • Perform daily club inspections and assign cleaning tasks.
  • Enter work orders into the Computer Maintenance Management System for facility and equipment maintenance.
  • Hold team members accountable for meeting company standards, audit daily paperwork, and resolve member issues.
  • Manage club inventory and communicate with GM and HQ on placing necessary orders.
  • Assist GM and back office with marketing and promotional activities.
  • Create club schedules and edit/verify payroll items.
  • Ensure team members adhere to company policies and guidelines, addressing minor infractions.
  • Report major infractions to GM and HR for resolution.
  • Audit club inventory and communicate recommendations for orders.
  • Assist GM with conducting Team Player Assessments (TPAs) and competency evaluations.
  • Maintain availability while off shift to field operational questions and emergencies.
  • Be on call during company Peak Season/Sale Expirations as needed.
  • Oversee club operations and staff when the GM is unavailable.
  • Assist GM and represent the company at community events and outreach activities.
  • Assist GM with conducting and leading regularly scheduled team meetings.
