The Assistant Manager is responsible for leading assigned sales floor departments while supporting the overall performance of the store. This role oversees merchandising, inventory availability, customer service, sales execution, employee development, safety, and department operations. Working closely with the Store Manager and other branch leaders, the Merchandise Assistant Manager ensures products are properly stocked, accurately priced, safely displayed, and supported by knowledgeable team members. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader, strong problem solver, and customer-focused professional who can balance sales, operations, merchandising, and employee development in a fast-paced building materials or home improvement environment. This position may serve as the senior manager on duty when designated leadership is unavailable.

  • Experience in sales floor operations, merchandising, inventory control, or customer service
  • Point-of-sale and basic computer experience required
  • Work is performed in retail, sales floor, warehouse, receiving, and outdoor store environments
  • Frequent interaction with customers, employees, vendors, drivers, and operational teams
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, crouch, kneel, climb steps or ladders, reach, grasp, and perform repetitive physical tasks
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull materials weighing up to 20 pounds
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds; heavier items require assistance or mechanical equipment
  • Exposure to moving equipment, moderate noise, weather conditions, and elevated storage areas
  • Ability to safely wear required PPE and work around forklifts and material-handling equipment

Nice To Haves

  • Product knowledge related to building materials, hardware, tools, or home improvement products preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, ERP, inventory, or retail management systems preferred
  • Forklift or material-handling equipment experience is a plus
  • May require evenings, weekends, holidays, or extended hours based on business needs

Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in providing friendly, knowledgeable, and professional customer service
  • Assist customers in identifying project needs and selecting appropriate products and materials
  • Ensure employees actively engage customers, provide product guidance, and identify add-on sales opportunities
  • Resolve difficult or escalated customer concerns promptly and professionally
  • Support cashiering, sales counter, and other customer-facing functions as business needs require
  • Promote profitable sales growth while maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Ensure team members understand and apply effective selling and customer service practices
  • Manage the daily performance of assigned sales floor departments
  • Ensure merchandise is clean, accurately priced, properly signed, safely displayed, and readily available
  • Monitor stock levels and coordinate replenishment to support customer demand, seasonal needs, and planned promotions
  • Maintain organized aisles, displays, bins, overhead storage areas, and receiving spaces
  • Review product availability, out-of-stock items, merchandising concerns, and department task lists
  • Monitor competitor pricing and merchandising activity and recommend appropriate responses
  • Support product promotions, preferred vendor programs, and new product introductions
  • Ensure merchandise is sold in a manner that supports gross margin and inventory-turn objectives
  • Maintain an efficient store layout that supports safety, sales, and customer convenience
  • Monitor inventory levels, product movement, shrinkage, and stock accuracy within assigned departments
  • Support cycle counts, inventory audits, replenishment, receiving, and stock-control activities
  • Work with Purchasing, Receiving, and Store leadership to address inventory shortages, excess stock, or product concerns
  • Ensure high-value merchandise, security doors, containers, and storage areas are properly secured
  • Help prevent theft, loss, product damage, and inventory discrepancies
  • Ensure department equipment, tools, fixtures, and company assets are properly maintained and stored
  • Coach, train, motivate, and support employees within assigned departments
  • Assist with onboarding new employees and cross-training team members in product knowledge, equipment use, customer service, and sales practices
  • Establish clear expectations and provide timely feedback on performance and behavior
  • Empower employees to resolve customer concerns and make sound operational decisions
  • Identify employee development opportunities and support career growth
  • Address employee concerns promptly and keep the Store Manager informed of significant issues
  • Support performance evaluations, coaching, corrective action, and documentation as appropriate
  • Foster a positive, accountable, and team-oriented work environment
  • Open and close the store in accordance with established procedures and checklists
  • Serve as manager on duty and provide leadership across the store when assigned
  • Support the Store Manager with daily operations, staffing, customer service, merchandising, and sales priorities
  • Coordinate with Operations, Yard, Receiving, Inside Sales, and other departments to support store performance
  • Communicate department priorities, expectations, and business updates to employees
  • Complete reports, operational documentation, and assigned administrative tasks accurately and on time
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
  • Promote and enforce company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and PPE standards
  • Ensure aisles, receiving areas, workspaces, and department storage locations remain clean and free of hazards
  • Monitor the safe operation of forklifts, ladders, material-handling equipment, and department tools
  • Ensure employees are properly trained before using equipment
  • Identify unsafe conditions and take prompt corrective action
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and report equipment concerns immediately
  • Participate in safety and security inspections, audits, meetings, and training
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, operational standards, and loss-prevention procedures
