About The Position

The Assistant Manager for Ski Patrol is a managerial position tasked with being responsible for leading multiple patrollers for the day-to-day operations on the mountain. This role will oversee the daily patrol functions and help coordinate with Senior Leaders to facilitate daily projects. Drive a strong safety and guest service culture within Patrol. Participate in daily operations as an advanced patroller, search and rescue or specialty area as needed. This position must be committed to providing the highest standard of service and a willingness to support all operations. The role will be committed to leadership development and operational continuity. This job requires strong leadership qualities, enthusiasm and passion for driving culture and innovative capabilities that maintain Vail Resorts.

Requirements

• High School Degree or equivalent
• Must have at least 5 years of patrol or similar experience
• Must have current EMT or OEC certification based on minimum resort requirements
• Knowledge of patrol including: medical, scheduling, weather, training, snowmobile, accident investigation, lift evacuation, and slope safety
• Effective decision making skills
• Working computer knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint
• Must be proficient in communication in English-speaking, writing and comprehension
• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age

Responsibilities

• Leads first and foremost with the Vail Leadership Competencies and Values, using the behavioral anchors as a guidance on leadership style
• Supportive and persuasive of change; Guides others towards successful adoption of change and clarifies the reasons, proactively helping others deal with the effects in a positive manner that builds the team
• Drive a positive patrol culture by holding patrollers accountable to performance and behavioral standards of the Company
• Positively support the combined patrol culture by supporting new procedures that work towards this goal
• Work constructively to bring solutions to the leadership table while vocally supporting agreed upon new changes with the patrol teams
• Recognize and reward employees for the positive behaviors and operational excellence
• Actively support behaviors that show respect for others on the team, and take necessary actions to correct any behaviors that do not show respect for the team
• Coordinate patrollers across the entire mountain in daily patrol operations, under the advisement of the senior leadership team
• Hold employees accountable to the Employee Manual and Patrol Manual
• Hold patrollers accountable to the work assigned and to the positive behaviors that reinforce one patrol team and the company culture. This role will be required to deliver positive and constructive feedback to patrollers, including coaching and feedback, taking disciplinary and corrective action when necessary
• Conduct timely performance evaluations in alignment with overall input from multiple sources including the senior leadership team
• Assist with special event planning and preparation
• Successfully complete hiring paperwork, training assistance, and scheduling of seasonal patrollers within given timeframes
• Ensure accountability of patroller development by tracking the training performance and certifications within given deadlines. Identify and immediately communicate to the senior leadership team when patrollers are falling short of their expectations
• Assist with maintaining an updated patrol SOP documentation, manuals, and training tools
• Contribute to the ongoing safety culture
• Travel is expected for training and support critical operations across the enterprise
• Demonstrates proven understanding and willingness to partner with mountain operations teams, including but not limited to: snowmaking, slope maintenance, risk management, terrain parks, lift maintenance, race crew, lift operations, mountain safety, mountain dining, special events, and transportation.
• Communicate individual and team performance in relation to job duties and behavioral expectations to senior leadership while documenting performance when necessary
• Communicate team goals, daily expectations and progress to front-line patrollers, improving the department’s metrics and measurements throughout the season
• Immediately inform, consult and take part in conducting necessary investigations of employee complaints, upon HR or senior leadership advisement
• Ensure proper documentation and follow up of patroller attendance, requested FMLA, ADA or other requested accommodations with input from HR and the senior leadership
• Identify employee issues and take applicable action to resolve inappropriate behaviors immediately, involving key stakeholders in any decision when necessary
• Assist in other tasks and projects as assigned.
• Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and strong guest service skills demonstrated through Epic Service Leadership.
