This role supervises and coordinates the activities of employees, ensuring that customer’s needs are met. The Assistant Manager is accountable and reports to the District Store Director and Store Manager, and all positions except those designated by the Store Director report to them. The role is responsible for maintaining a positive attitude, creating an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork, and encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers. They provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service, learning customer names and assisting them with their shopping needs. The Assistant Manager is also responsible for upholding the Hy-Vee culture, overseeing training, handling employee issues, coordinating disciplinary procedures, and assisting management with pricing and sales strategies. They determine the placement of ad and promotional displays, ensure product quality and quantities, and maintain store standards for customer service, employee relations, and departmental profitability. Compliance with accounting procedures, building/ground maintenance, and sanitation are also key responsibilities. The role requires understanding and using store technology, assisting with labor scheduling, evaluating employee performance, and enforcing safety procedures. They direct merchandise ordering, coordinate employee compliance with policies, and assist with replenishing shelves and constructing displays. Problem-solving with employees regarding job duties and policies is essential, as is adhering to company policies and store guidelines. Secondary duties include determining employee motivational needs, recruiting and interviewing applicants, staying current with market trends, providing continuous education to employees, recommending merchandise allocation, pursuing retail educational opportunities, assisting in all store areas as needed, and working with department heads on various operational aspects. They also sell merchandise to employees, handle cash registers, and perform other related duties.
