About The Position

This position provides assistance for the day-to-day operations, programs and services of a public library in the Borough library system. Work is performed and duties are carried out in accordance with established policies, procedures, and Borough core values: Accountability, Customer Focus, Dedication, Integrity, Responsiveness and Teamwork.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a course of study directly related to the occupational field.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and any combination of post-secondary education or experience which provides the expertise required to perform effectively the functions of the position may substitute for the Associate degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • One year of experience in a similar position, sufficient to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
  • Good people skills.
  • Familiarity with common business machines and computer operations.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alaska for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check and physical.

Nice To Haves

  • Library experience and/or customer service experience.
  • Familiarity with developing and leading programs for toddlers, preschool, elementary, middle, high school, and/or adults is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patrons with circulation and reference requests; checks materials in and out; places holds on materials; collects monies for copies, faxes, fines, and lost or damaged items; issues library cards; assists patrons in locating materials in the collection.
  • Processes inter-library loan requests; receives and processes items; prepares returned items for shipment.
  • Provides assistance to patrons in the use of library technology; assists patrons in the use of computerized databases.
  • Receives and catalogs new materials; completes holding records; appends barcodes, spine labels, identification stamps, and protective covers, Mends books.
  • Sorts donations; selects items for addition to the library collection or for sale or disposal.
  • Researches, plans and implements library programs for children, youth and adults; coordinates publicity for programs.
  • Recruits, trains and oversees the work of volunteers.
  • Opens and closes the library.
  • Issues Borough and State of Alaska permits as requested.
  • Gathers and compiles information for monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Oversees the operations of the Library in the absence of the Librarian.
  • Performs light custodial duties.
  • Performs related duties.
