About The Position

The Assistant JV Softball Coach is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and promoting a comprehensive athletic program designed to meet the needs and interests of the school community. This role involves providing ethical leadership, coaching instruction, and motivation to student athletes and staff to maintain a successful athletic program. The position requires adherence to school and league rules, support for student athletes' academic and behavioral standards, and collaboration with various stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Completion of CPR and First Aid training or enrollment in current CPR and First Aid training.
  • Completion of VHSL Coaches Education requirements.
  • Proficiency in public speaking and written communication.
  • Emotional maturity, objectivity, and sensitivity to people and their concerns.
  • Ability to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Three (3) current professional references (Name, phone number, email address). At least one reference should be a current supervisor or most recent supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Complies and supports the rules, regulations, and policies of the school, division, Virginia High School League, and district and regional councils.
  • Assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training.
  • Assists in maintaining high academic and behavioral standards for all student athletes.
  • Monitors academic performance of athletes and ensures academic assistance and follow-up is provided.
  • Supervises, directs, and coordinates student athletes.
  • Assists the Director of Student Activities (DSA) and principal in the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches.
  • Assists students in communication with prospective college coaches and provides letters of recommendation.
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates the performance of all assistant coaches of the respective sport.
  • Develops high moral and cohesiveness within the athletic staff.
  • Works cooperatively with the athletic director to assure proper insurance coverage for all athletes.
  • Works cooperatively with other head athletic coaches to operate a well-balanced activities program.
  • Interacts with student athletes, teachers, parents, and the community to build enthusiasm and program support.
  • Establishes procedures for communicating with parents/guardians.
  • Fosters among participants and spectators an appreciation for athletics, a desire to win, good sportsmanship, and pride in self, team, school, and community.
  • Organizes and monitors fund raising activities and fulfills all duties associated with program fundraisers.
  • Directs the training, conditioning, and performance of the varsity athletic team and leads, supervises, and assists assistant coaches.
  • Organizes, develops, and implements off-season strength and conditioning program.
  • Acts as a positive influence upon the behavior of athletic staff and teams.
  • Is present and personally directs the team at all varsity contests and as many junior varsity and freshmen contests as possible, and supervises athletes at postseason competition.
  • Advises the DSA on the preparation of schedules for the respective sport.
  • Advises the DSA in the selection and performance evaluations of officials.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Recommends to the DSA the type and amount of equipment and supplies needed.
  • Provides for the inventory and care of equipment.
  • Advises the DSA of the condition of athletic facilities and needs for preparation and maintenance.
  • Assists the DSA to ensure that lists of all players eligible for athletic contests are prepared and maintained.
  • Recommends to the DSA and/or principal the removal of athletes from the team(s) when regulations are not met.
  • Ensures that all athletes have undergone and passed medical examinations before the regular practice season begins.
  • Understands the Emergency Action Plan and instructs participants in safety procedures.
  • Ensures the availability of a properly supplied first aid kit and emergency care cards.
  • Organizes a system for encouraging students to try out for the team and develops and recruits support staff.
  • Collects and keeps on file records, statistics, news items, and photographs for the athletic teams.
  • Recommends to the athletic director those students who qualify for a varsity letter or junior varsity/freshman certificate.

  • Attends all required meetings.
  • Responds to media, telephone, email, and in-person requests, inquiries, and questions professionally.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
