About The Position

The Assistant Horticulturist supports the planning, implementation, and maintenance of horticultural programs and landscapes. This role involves assisting in the care of plants, trees, and gardens, ensuring the health and beauty of green spaces, and providing technical and operational support to the horticulture team.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of experience in horticulture, landscaping, or plant care.
  • Pesticide Applicator License.
  • Certification in Sustainable Horticulture or related programs.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and kneeling.
  • Walk on uneven terrain and climb on ladders.
  • Exposure to extreme heat, cold, and rain.
  • Exposure to various chemical fumes and noise.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30-50 pounds at times.
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive hand movements such as planting, weeding, pruning and harvesting which can be physically demanding.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to work for long hours in various weather conditions without tiring quickly.
  • Good eyesight to identify plant diseases, pests, and subtle changes in plant health.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planting, cultivation, pruning, and maintenance of plants, trees, shrubs, and flowers in designated areas.
  • Monitor plant health and identify pests, diseases, or nutrient deficiencies, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Prepare soil and apply fertilizers, compost, pesticides, and other treatments according to established guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain horticultural tools and equipment, such as pruners, mowers, and irrigation systems.
  • Help design and implement landscaping projects, including seasonal displays and specialty gardens.
  • Collaborate with the horticulture team to develop sustainable planting and irrigation plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of plant care activities, including watering schedules, pest management, and soil amendments.
  • Provide guidance and training to seasonal workers, volunteers, or interns as directed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and environmental standards in all horticultural activities.
  • Stay updated on horticultural trends, techniques, and technologies.
