About The Position

Newsday is seeking a talented and versatile journalist to assist in our coverage of sports at over 150 Long Island high schools. This role requires strong writing, reporting and interviewing skills and the ability to compile accurate scores and highlights on tight deadlines for online and print publication. This is a part-time position that requires flexibility to work nights and weekends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related required
  • Some knowledge of sports preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication required
  • Attention to and accuracy with details
  • Must have a drivers license in good standing and a car to travel to/from various locations across Long Island.
  • Ability to work a flexible and varied schedule to include nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Writing and reporting assignments that range from breaking news, top player lists, game coverage and data-driven features and enterprise that take readers beyond the final score.
  • The ability to cover a high school sports beat while building strong relationships with coaches, administrators and players.
  • Embracing video and social media to help elevate our coverage across platforms.
  • Compile sports scores, highlights and statistics for over 35 different varsity sports.

Benefits

  • The hourly rate for this role is $23.89/hr, 28 hrs/week
  • This position is represented by the Printing, Packaging and Production Workers Union of North America (PPPWU), Local 406-c.
