About The Position

The Assistant Head Technician-Stage is responsible for supervising backstage operations during set-ups and performances at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. This role may also involve facility management during evening/weekend events. The position requires ensuring client requirements are met, resolving client problems, and overseeing the implementation of production services according to established policies. The Assistant Head Technician also represents the Chan Centre to the public, clients, and artist representatives, and ensures the security of the building and the safety of performers, staff, and patrons. This role involves compiling reports, acting as a primary stage technician for some events, and performing other related duties. Errors in judgment could significantly impact client and patron relations, patron safety, and the financial viability of the Chan Centre.

Requirements

  • Diploma in a related field of arts production or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum five years of experience in various production related facets of the performing arts demonstrating a responsibility progression.
  • Specific skills in Stage Rigging, Stage Lighting, and Stage Management are required.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in training, overseeing, and scheduling staff, including the supervision of stage technicians.
  • Ensure client requirements are met in a timely manner.
  • Work within the provided schedule.
  • Resolve client problems related to stage and backstage areas with direction from the Production Manager.
  • Ensure effective implementation of new and previously arranged Production Services to clients for their performances and related activities at the Chan Centre, following established guidelines.
  • Recommend policies and procedures to the Production Manager.
  • In conjunction with the Ticket, Bar, and Front of House Coordinators, ensure performances and events run smoothly.
  • Oversee and ensure that negotiated client production requirements are met for each performance event.
  • Represent Chan Centre to the general public, clients, and Artist’s representatives, including staff and students from various departments and offices.
  • Ensure security of the building and safety of performers, staff, and patrons.
  • Report deficiencies of building amenities to the Production Manager.
  • Compile performance and event reports and forward them to appropriate staff.
  • Act as the primary stage technician on some events.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Motivate and lead casual stage and production staff.
