About The Position

Assistant Guide Apprentice is responsible for providing the safe transport and supervision of clients (with Lead Guide) while conducting bear viewing and sport fishing operations at any of the designated locations and supporting facilities maintenance as directed by the Lodge Manager. This is a seasonal position starting in June and ending in October.

Requirements

  • Skilled and able to provide high level of verbal communication, as demonstrated by the effective “customer service” interface with clients, KWA and Koniag, Inc. staff.
  • Ability to pass firearms safety training, practical field demonstration and charging bear course.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a firearms safety training, practical field demonstration and charging bear course. Firearm experience a plus.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and groomed appearance at all times and wear required KBBC guide apparel and uniform.
  • Basic knowledge of bear safety protocols and equipment, fly fishing, rods, equipment and tackle a plus.
  • Ability to work, all days of the week and holidays. Must be able to work for extended periods in all types of weather conditions.
  • Able to work as a member of a team and independently.
  • Able to read, interpret, and follow written & verbal instructions.
  • Must have good eye-hand coordination, physical fitness, and a good sense of balance.
  • Must be able to move weight-bearing materials and equipment on uneven terrain.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to pass a drug test.
  • HS Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to obtain and uphold these licenses and certifications: o CPR and First Aid certifications and have the ability to obtain a Wilderness First Responder certification. o Certification in Kodiak Unified Bear Subcommittee (KUBS) commercial bear viewing course in Kodiak.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Lead Guide with bear viewing excursions, including boat preparations, stocking guest refreshments, and clean-up.
  • Understand and comply with all bear viewing protocols as defined by the Kodiak Brown Bear Center’s standard operating policies.
  • Be able to learn and identify different species of fish, plants and animal species. To discuss and teach clients.
  • Maintain wildlife viewing equipment including boots, raingear, water bottles, (prep) fishing equipment, bug nets chairs, etc.
  • Maintain clean and stocked boat. Operate and use a Satellite phone, VHF Radio.
  • Upkeep on trails and dock as needed.
  • Keeping the KBBC campus area clean of debris and safety hazards.
  • Perform support on required facilities maintenance. Support and assist with other work for carpenters, electricians, plumbers & etc. Operate small hand and power tools of all types.
  • Learn the operations for closing and opening the lodge.
  • Other duties as assigned.
