About The Position

The Assistant General Manager (“AGM”) reports directly to the General Manager and is responsible for oversight of all event operations across the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority’s (“MCCA”) facilities. This position assists the General Manager with the overall management, promotion and operation of the Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center (“MCEC”), Lawn on D (“LOD”) and the John B. Hynes Veterans Memorial Convention Center (“Hynes”) facilities. The AGM supports business activities, strategies and leadership, and provides oversight and direction to assigned operating departments and contract partners. The AGM provides senior leadership across Event Operations, working in close partnership with Directors, department heads, and key stakeholders – including industry associates, customers, and contract partners – to manage staff, coordinate and execute operational plans, and develop the policies, procedures, and programs necessary to achieve the General Manager’s strategic goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • A minimum of 7 years of senior leadership experience in convention center, hotel, or hospitality facility management, with a demonstrated track record of overseeing complex, large-scale operations.
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff, budgets, and contracted service partners in a complex operational environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present effectively to diverse audiences and negotiate at a senior level.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to collect and interpret complex data, documents, and technical information to draw sound conclusions.
  • Ability to handle sensitive inquiries, complaints, and conflicts with professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to build effective relationships across all levels of the organization.
  • Commitment to maintaining a professional image consistent with the standards of a public-facing leadership role.

Nice To Haves

  • 7 –10 years of senior leadership experience as a General Manager, Assistant General Manager, or equivalent title at a major convention center, convention hotel, or comparable venue with significant meeting, exhibition, and ballroom space.
  • Experience working with hotels, Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), or Convention and Visitors Bureaus (CVBs) to pursue and develop convention business.
  • Strong strategic thinking and visionary leadership capabilities.
  • Industry certifications including CMM, CMP, CEM, or CVP.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the General Manager with overall operations of the MCEC, LOD, and Hynes, including coordinating the scheduling of exhibitions, meetings, ballroom events, trade and consumer shows, and other facility activities.
  • Serves as the lead on weekly production meetings for the MCEC, LOD, and Hynes operations.
  • Ensures staff have the resources necessary to effectively carry out their responsibilities. Establishes and maintains an effective system of communication throughout the MCCA, developing procedures and controls to promote adequate information flow across venues and contractors.
  • Serves as a technical resource, providing advice and assistance on facility improvements, construction, and operations.
  • Oversees contracts with vendors and contracted service partners including food and beverage, audiovisual, rigging, parking, and cleaning, fostering close working relationships to ensure seamless event planning, execution, and post-event review.
  • Assists with overseeing the MCCA event calendar (the "Book") for all MCCA-hosted events.
  • Serves as manager on duty on weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Provides leadership to the Event Operations team across all MCCA facilities.
  • Provides leadership to staff in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures. Supports and motivates Operations Department staff, with particular emphasis on Directors, to advance the MCCA's mission and strategic objectives.
  • Partners with the HR Department on hiring, development, retention, and talent planning, as well as any other personnel matters.
  • Fosters a culture that promotes the highest ethical standards, individual integrity, fiscal and social responsibility, excellence in customer service, and open communication.
  • Represents the MCCA with major clients, customers, tenants, contract partners, elected officials, and the public, including in contract negotiations.
  • Works collaboratively with the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) and the Boston Convention Marketing Center (BCMC) to develop and implement effective sales and marketing efforts.
  • Engages with venue end users, meeting planners, and key industry partners to develop ideas and activities that enhance the MCCA's competitive position, maximize profitability, and broaden market share.
  • Works collaboratively with BCMC staff to implement and continuously improve sales and marketing procedures for all MCCA facilities, including the Lawn on D.
  • Monitors ongoing revenue generation and production.
  • Researches and identifies industry trends in the convention, meetings, and hospitality sectors to identify new revenue opportunities and maintain a competitive advantage.
  • Assists the General Manager with budget development in accordance with MCCA guidelines and expectations, managing the budget throughout the year to maintain operational and fiscal effectiveness.
  • Oversees and is accountable for the approval and processing of expenditures and budgets across the LOD and Operations departments at the MCEC and Hynes, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and MCCA policies.
  • Communicates regularly with the General Manager on operating results relative to established objectives, making recommendations for operational efficiencies and taking corrective action where needed.
  • Supports the MCCA in carrying out its policy decisions and governance responsibilities, ensuring the General Manager is briefed on key issues in a timely manner. Partners with senior leadership to identify and address issues related to the MCCA's mission, vision, and strategic plans.
  • Establishes current and long-range strategies, objectives, plans, and policies in alignment with MCCA's goals and objectives.
  • Oversees special studies, investigations, projects, and reports as directed by the General Manager.
  • Attends staff and Board meetings as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
