About The Position

Roku is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Litigation to manage its litigation portfolio outside of intellectual property, including consumer class actions, commercial disputes, and government investigations, with a focus on privacy-related litigation and regulatory enforcement. This role involves end-to-end management of disputes and inquiries, strategy development, directing outside counsel, and making decisions on resolution. The position reports to the VP, Deputy General Counsel, Strategic Litigation and IP. The role emphasizes creative problem-solving, clear-headedness in ambiguous situations, and strong written communication skills.

Requirements

Substantial experience managing complex litigation at a top-tier law firm or in-house, including consumer class actions and government investigations, from case assessment through resolution.
Skilled at developing litigation strategy and managing outside counsel to efficient, well-reasoned outcomes.
A track record of finding creative, non-obvious solutions to hard legal problems.
Comfortable operating without a clear precedent or roadmap, making sound judgment calls amid incomplete facts, unsettled law, and competing pressures.
Exceptional legal writing skills – clear, persuasive, and fast.
Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to advise senior stakeholders and simplify complex legal concepts.
Proven ability to build relationships and operate effectively across a matrixed organization.
Strong track record of handling complex legal issues in a fast-paced, technology-driven company.
10+ years of combined litigation experience at a law firm, in-house, or both.
Direct experience litigating consumer class actions and/or handling government investigations.
Experience in high-growth technology or media companies.
J.D. from a U.S. accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.

Responsibilities

Manage Roku’s corporate litigation portfolio outside of intellectual property, including consumer class actions, commercial and contract disputes, and privacy-related claims under laws such as the VPPA, CIPA, BIPA, and CCPA.
Define case strategy and make recommendations on litigation, settlement, or escalation.
Manage government investigations and inquiries from regulators like the FTC, state attorneys general, and data protection authorities.
Coordinate cross-functional responses to regulatory matters with teams such as Privacy, Security, Communications, and Government Affairs.
Develop novel legal theories and creative litigation strategies for complex matters.
Operate comfortably amid incomplete facts, unsettled law, and uncertainty, making sound judgment calls.
Write persuasive arguments, memos, and correspondence to advance matters.
Help build and scale repeatable litigation processes, including intake, early case assessment, playbooks, and post-mortems.
Manage outside counsel relationships and budgets, ensuring efficient and high-quality outcomes.
Serve as a trusted advisor to Product, Engineering, Ads, Data/Analytics, and Compliance teams on litigation and privacy risk.
Provide clear reporting on litigation exposure, trends, and key matters to senior leadership.
