This is a highly responsible and professional work in the management and command of routine and emergency operations of the New Haven Fire Department. Work involves assisting the Fire Chief in the effective operation of the department through control of activities, the determination of departmental procedures, the planning of work priorities, goals, training assignment and supervising of all Department members. Work also involves responsibility for all firefighting operations of the department, directing firefighting/rescue procedures, homeland security related activities, as well as the conduct of activities to comply with the departmental policies, procedures, and special instructions of the Fire Chief. An incumbent in this classification exercises considerable independence in the performance of duties and receives general supervision from the Fire Chief. Work is reviewed through discussion, reports and conferences. However, the employee works independently in supervising all technical operations. Supervision is exercised directly through subordinates over all Department personnel. In the absence of all the Fire Chief and the Assistant Fire Chief of Administration, this person assumes all responsibilities of the Fire Chief.
