About The Position

An Assistant Driller is responsible for a variety of field-centric duties including driving the drill rig or semi-truck and trailer (requiring Class A CDL with air brake endorsement), maintaining drill rigs, troubleshooting equipment problems, and working with a Driller to complete assignments using various drilling and sampling techniques. The role involves operating a drill rig for geotechnical borings, performing outdoor work in various weather conditions, and collaborating with traffic control subcontractors when necessary. The position also requires travel for out-of-town, overnight projects and effective teamwork to meet client needs.

Requirements

Basic construction competencies including ability to determine location from surface features and landmarks by interpretation from surveys, road maps, aerial photos, topographic maps, and geologic maps; understanding construction stakes set by others, and color markings of utility companies.
Has a general aptitude for identifying and resolving complex technical problems in the field, utilizing critical thinking and logical reasoning.

Responsibilities

Assist and work with a lead Driller to complete assignments using various drilling and sampling techniques, including lifting and other manual work as required.
Must be able to lift 100-pounds.
Drive the drill rig or semi-truck and trailer to project sites, which requires a Class A CDL with air brake endorsement.
Promote and adhere to safe work practices at all times for yourself, the lead Driller and others while driving and working at project sites.
Operate a drill rig to perform geotechnical borings from a few feet deep to more than 100 feet deep.
Properly maintain drill rigs and other necessary equipment.
Troubleshoot and resolve drill rig and equipment problems.
Perform work outdoors at project sites in a variety of weather conditions typical to Michigan.
Work with traffic control subcontractors to SME when required for roadway work projects.
Work safely and alert others to potential safety hazards.
Wear appropriate personal protection equipment at job sites at all times.
Travel to, from and work at out-of-town, overnight projects that are located away from your base of operations (sometimes for extended periods of time).
Work effectively as a team player to meet the needs of our internal and external clients.
