About The Position

This position provides for the prosecution of criminal and non-criminal cases. This is an entry-level position in the attorney series, and the incumbent is expected to become fully effective within three years. The incumbent handles a variety of misdemeanors and lower-level felony cases, such as DWIs and bad check cases. They also perform legal research for felony cases for higher-level attorneys, assist in trial teams, and perform non-prosecution duties as assigned. Felony work is performed under supervision. The incumbent receives general to intensive supervision as needed from the assigned supervisor. They work independently and make decisions within guidelines, including decisions to dismiss, proceed to trial, or negotiate plea agreements, while seeking guidance from their supervisor and/or higher-level attorneys.

Requirements

J.D. degree
Current license to practice law in New Mexico
Basic knowledge and skills in criminal prosecution
Basic knowledge and skills in rules of evidence
Basic knowledge and skills in rules of criminal procedure
Basic knowledge and skills in public relations
Basic knowledge and skills in organization
Basic computer skills
Ability to draft legal documents
Ability to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to research and analyze information and situations
