About The Position

The San Francisco District Attorney's Office is a leading law enforcement organization dedicated to making San Francisco a safer city through collaboration with communities and law enforcement agencies. The office investigates, charges, and prosecutes all criminal violations within the City and County of San Francisco. Assistant District Attorneys gain significant responsibility early in their careers, typically starting in the Criminal Division and managing a variety of cases. As they progress, they handle more serious and complex matters. The department seeks both entry-level and experienced attorneys for various units within the Criminal Division, including Misdemeanors, Preliminary Hearings, General Felonies, Intake, Juvenile, Homicide, Child Abuse & Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Major Crimes, Alternative/Collaborative Courts, and Vulnerable Victims. Placement depends on the Office's discretion, applicant experience, and operational needs. The ability to work with diverse populations is crucial, and the Office strives to recruit and retain staff that reflects the community it serves.

Requirements

Membership in the CA State Bar Association.
License to practice in all state courts.

Nice To Haves

Comprehensive knowledge of state and federal and municipal codes, laws, and ordinances, particularly as applied to civil and criminal laws.
Knowledge of legal processes and techniques of courtroom and jury trial work.
Knowledge of administrative techniques and methods, particularly as they relate to the activities of the District Attorney's Office.

Responsibilities

Tries jury and bench criminal cases and litigates evidentiary and other hearings in the San Francisco Superior Court.
Represents the People of the State of California in person via court appearances and in written petitions, motions, appeals, and/or other court documents.
Prepares court documents, which may involve word processing and database management.
May be placed in a high-stress environment and/or exposed to complex and challenging cases.
Exercises fair and ethical prosecution practices, respecting the humanity and dignity of all involved in a criminal case.
Interviews witnesses.
Conducts and/or supervises investigations.
Writes legal briefs in conjunction with assigned cases and trials.
Prepares daily court calendar and maintains records of warrants and citations issued.
Maintains files, including accurate recording of work product status, filing memos on case dispositions, running law enforcement database checks on criminal backgrounds, and transporting files to court.
Receives and investigates complaints from the public and police department representatives to determine the necessity for issuing citations or warrants.
Interviews witnesses and issues citations.
Conducts citation hearings and determines the necessity for issuing warrants.
Researches legal issues for the prosecution of criminal cases.
May represent the District Attorney to other law enforcement agencies, community-based organizations, and neighborhood/citizen meetings.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
