About The Position

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), a national not-for-profit association established in 1863 representing over 110,000 veterinarians, is seeking an Assistant Director to join its Education & Research Division. The AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and the veterinary profession, with a mission to lead the profession by advocating for its members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health. This role reports to the Chief of Academic Affairs, Research & Accreditation and will perform functions to assist the Chief Officer in proposing, developing, and implementing AVMA policies and programs concerning veterinary research, veterinary specialty board certification, specialists in academia, specialists in practice and industry, and the AVMA Veterinary Clinical Trials Registry. The Assistant Director will work closely with AVMA governance entities in the execution of duties and provide primary professional staff support for the Council on Research (COR), the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS), and the Veterinary Specialty Organizations Committee (VSOC), among others. This position will also serve as the principal administrator of the AVMA Veterinary Clinical Trials Registry (VCT). The position may be performed remotely, with less than 25% travel required.

Requirements

  • DVM/VMD is required
  • Minimum of three years’ work experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of veterinary research
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Ability to synthesize information & summarize clearly, logically & persuasively
  • Must be a critical thinker & problem solver
  • Must interact & effectively communicate with members of the scientific & the non-scientific community; & the AVMA leadership & membership
  • Basic computer skills are required, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams & data management via OneDrive
  • Must be an AVMA member in good standing

Nice To Haves

  • PhD &/or board certification in an AVMA-Recognized Veterinary Specialty Organization preferred
  • Preferred knowledge of or experience in veterinary education
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about issues affecting veterinary specialty board certification

Responsibilities

  • Perform functions to assist the Chief Officer to propose, develop & implement AVMA policies & programs concerning veterinary research, veterinary specialty board certification, specialists in academia, specialists in practice & industry, & the AVMA Veterinary Clinical Trials Registry.
  • Work closely with AVMA governance entities in the execution of duties.
  • Provide primary professional staff support for the Council on Research (COR), the American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS), & the Veterinary Specialty Organizations Committee (VSOC), & other governance entities as needed.
  • Serve as the principal administrator of the AVMA Veterinary Clinical Trials Registry (VCT).
  • Manage multiple projects & meetings simultaneously.
  • Organize, plan & manage group meetings.
