About The Position

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced Assistant Director, Upward Bound, 50% FTE at its Detroit campus location. The COE Upward Bound Assistant Director is a part time, 24 hours a week, 12-month position, funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO program grant. The work hours are irregular and will require evenings and weekends as well as the flexibility to travel. The Assistant Director will report to Dr. Sandra M. Gonzales, the director and grant PI.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology or other related field
  • Three to five years of leadership and grant coordination experience
  • Experience as an advisor, counselor or educator
  • General administration skills, such as program development, grant writing, fiscal management and supervision of personnel
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in Spanish and English
  • Experience working with economically and educationally disadvantaged youth
  • Experience working with students from a diverse background, particularly English learners

Responsibilities

  • Oversight of the academic and summer components
  • Postsecondary preparation enrollment and success
  • Program travel and enrichment initiatives
  • Supervision and training of staff and students
  • Implementation of evidence-based program design, tracking, evaluation and reporting of outcomes in compliance with stated objectives of Wayne State University and the U.S. Department of Education
  • Assisting with grant writing and the next cycle of Upward Bound proposal development
  • Overseeing the recruitment and selection of participants
  • Academic and personal support of students
  • Establishing curricular guidelines and benchmarks for academic, personal and cultural enrichment activities, standardized test prep and career exploration
  • Developing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with families and schools, as well as members of the institutional and external target communities
  • Implementation of evaluative measures
  • Formal reporting of program progress to target schools, the University, and federal offices/agencies
  • Remaining in compliance with all institutional, local, state, and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures
