About The Position

A full time, twelve-month position, the Assistant Director has primary responsibilities for the academic year tutorial program, composition/literature or math/science curriculum development, the planning and implementing of two satellite summer residential programs and testing & assessment. The Assistant Director will have supporting responsibilities for a large academic year cross age tutorial program, instructional Saturday components, student advising, student recruitment, and cultural enrichment activities. The Assistant Director will report to the Director of the Upward Bound Program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Demonstrated record of successful experience working in educational programs and/or community services targeting students similar to Upward Bound (low income, potential first-generation college-bound).
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to the College’s automobile insurance carrier.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, Internet research and social media navigation

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Prior experience in a residential summer or year-round program for low income and/or first-generation college-bound students (such as an Upward Bound, Summer Bridge, or MESA Program) preferred.
  • One year of high school or college level teaching experience in related subjects preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking and writing skills preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of tutors and tutorial program; includes tutor training, attendance tracking, hiring and dismissal, payroll processing and field supervision of tutors and Part Time Tutorial Coordinators and study hall logistics
  • Coordination of all program and student academic assessment activities: this includes collecting quarter and semester grades and transcripts, collecting and, when necessary, administering program testing instruments; organizes office systems for collection of all academic data and assessment
  • Recruitment of new program participants at two Upward Bound high schools each year; this includes presentations, assessment interviews, selection recommendations and, as needed, support for home visits
  • Designs and leads specific academic training for summer program staff: topics to include curriculum planning, lesson design, alternative assessment, classroom methodologies and pedagogies, etc.
  • Set up internship component and logistics for two summer residential programs
  • Coordination of Alumni tracking and outreach efforts
  • Serve as residential summer Coordinator or instructor during the summer residential component (five weeks)
  • Collection of data for annual performance report to the US Department of Education
  • Development of core subject instruction (English & composition or social sciences) for summer programs
  • Academic advising for a cohort of Upward Bound participants including parent follow up and designing college planning curriculum for assigned cohort
  • Lead role for all outdoor education, community service, and fine arts enrichment activities
  • Provide support for parent & community outreach programs and college exploration activities and trips
  • Supervision of two tutorial sessions at target high schools each week
  • Weekly visits to target schools to follow up with students and teachers
  • Drive students and tutors to various program activities and functions
  • Other duties as assigned
