About The Position

The position provides student support and leadership to mitigate and eliminate barriers to educational success for students at GVSU with a specific focus on initiatives related to Asian, and Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (AAPIDA) students. This role cultivates an inclusive, affirming, and equitable environment in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). This is a 0.8 FTE position. The Assistant Director will work a standard 40-hour/week schedule during the Fall and Winter semesters and reduce to a 6.25 hours/week schedule during the months of June and July.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Minimum of three to five (3-5) years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination.
  • Experience managing and supervising teams and/or projects.
  • Experience managing websites and social media platforms.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, interpersonal communication, and organizational skills.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must not require sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Must have the physical stamina to work long hours and/or more than 5 days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, social work, or related field.
  • Higher education experience.
  • Experience related to retention in higher education.
  • Familiarity with and/or experience building intersectional support structures for students.
  • Experience engaging, supporting, and developing programs for Desi and Desi American students.
  • Experience in higher education working with AAPIDA students.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently and working toward shared team goals.
  • Experience developing, administering, and evaluating student programming and events.
  • Experience developing informational presentations/workshops for groups, conferences, summits or any large-group presentations.
  • Experience with platform-based budget management (MS Teams or WorkDay), grant writing implementation, and assessment experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide student support and leadership within the Office of Multicultural Affairs and collaborate with campus partners to further divisional and university goals.
  • Develop, plan, execute, assess, and provide overall leadership for programs such as Laker Connections Welcome, Asian Student Achievement Program, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebration, and Asian Student Graduation.
  • Oversee programs and initiatives that positively impact the recruitment and retention of students, including serving on committees devoted to policy creation, and process revision at the university level.
  • Recruit and retain students; provide support, advocacy, and referrals to students by creating one-on-one meeting plans, developing goals, and engaging in non-academic advising as needed.
  • Track and assess program effectiveness, year-end reporting, and assist with goal setting and strategic planning for the office.
  • Co-supervise and provide leadership to student employees and graduate assistants.
  • Support Office of Multicultural Affairs communication efforts by maintaining the center’s website, social media, and creating marketing materials.
  • Locate, design, and implement fundraising initiatives in conjunction with community and campus partners to benefit the populations this position serves.
  • Lead and serve as a university-wide resource for the Asian Student Union and other Asian and Pacific Islander student supports. Serve as a liaison to the Asian Faculty Staff Association.
  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.
