About The Position

The Assistant Director of School Climate & Standards is a leadership position within the North Carolina Center for Safer Schools (CFSS). CFSS serves as the state’s primary resource for school safety research, training, and technical assistance to prevent and respond to school violence. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position provides strategic oversight of statewide initiatives focused on improving school climate, strengthening behavioral health systems, and promoting safe learning environments. The Assistant Director supervises program staff, manages high-impact school safety initiatives, and collaborates with public school units, state agencies, and community partners.

Requirements

• This position requires strong leadership, public speaking, program management, and cross-agency collaboration skills, as well as experience in school safety, behavioral health, threat assessment, or a closely related field.
• Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five (5) years of experience related to the area of assignment.
• Equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the CFSS Behavioral Health Unit.
• Serve as the statewide subject matter expert on Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) for K–12 public schools.
• Provide training and technical assistance to multidisciplinary school-based BTAM teams, including administrators, counselors, school psychologists, School Resource Officers, and law enforcement.
• Develop and disseminate guidance, protocols, and tools to support consistent statewide implementation of BTAM and behavioral health initiatives.
• Monitor BTAM implementation across LEAs and provide quality improvement support.
• Plan and conduct statewide, regional, and virtual training events related to behavioral health, threat assessment, and prevention programming.
• Provide oversight of school climate initiatives, discipline standards, and anonymous reporting systems.
• Represent CFSS at conferences, stakeholder meetings, and legislative briefings.
