About The Position

This is a live-in position that provides coordination and oversight of residence life, student activities, student clubs, student government, orientation leaders, and community service opportunities at one location, aligning with an educationally developmental approach. The role assists with student success initiatives, budget management, and service on university-wide committees. Responsibilities include responding to on-campus emergencies and collaborating with Public Safety to maintain a secure and supportive environment. This position participates in an evening and weekend on-call duty rotation. Each Assistant Director will be responsible for coordinating one of the following areas system-wide: Resident Assistant Training, Resident Assistant Selection, Student Conduct, or Resident Assistant Programming.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in appropriate discipline and one to three years relevant experience, or experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to obtain a VSC fleet license.
  • Understanding the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University, including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
  • Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.
  • Excellent interpersonal, supervisory, and communication skills.
  • Able to meet students where they are, and ensure they feel listened to, and that they are comfortable working with an advisor to navigate challenges and concerns as they come up.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as Aviso, Colleague, Self-Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.
  • Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or ‘soft’ skills, and social skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as families/guardians and external resources in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and advocacy aspects of the job.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings to provide student support outside of normal business hours.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, administer, and evaluate a comprehensive student activities and engagement program that supports student development and campus life.
  • Develop and modify programs based on student interests, institutional priorities, and best practices in higher education.
  • Advise and support student organizations, including the Student Government Association, providing leadership development, guidance, and operational oversight.
  • Supervise the planning and implementation of student leadership development programs, including training, mentorship, and ongoing support for emerging student leaders.
  • Coordinate and support major campus programs and events, including Orientation, Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Commencement.
  • Promote and develop community service and civic engagement opportunities, including partnerships, trainings, and recognition programs.
  • Manage contracts, invoices, and purchasing processes associated with student programming.
  • Assist in the administration of the student activities operating budget.
  • Support and supervise evening and weekend programming and student events as needed.
  • Maintain and utilize communication platforms, including social media, to promote student engagement and campus activities.
  • Conduct assessments and evaluations of programs to inform continuous improvement.
  • Support the management and daily operations of residence halls, including room assignments, occupancy management, key control, and housing records.
  • Supervise student staff, including Resident Assistants and orientation leaders, including recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the residence halls and foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive residential community.
  • Enforce university policies and address student conduct concerns, including adjudication, documentation, and follow-up.
  • Conduct health and safety inspections and ensure compliance with residence life policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate residence hall openings, closings, and end-of-year processes, including damage billing and move-out procedures.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of residence life programming and community development initiatives.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation and respond to emergencies and crisis situations in coordination with Public Safety and campus partners.
  • Act as a first responder to on-campus incidents, supporting emergency response, evacuations, and student welfare checks.
  • Train residence life staff in emergency response, conduct processes, and community standards.
  • Build strong community standards through daily interaction, mentorship, and student engagement.
  • Advise and counsel students on a wide range of personal, academic, and social matters, referring to campus and community resources as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with campus partners, including Academic Affairs, Public Safety, Facilities, and Conference & Events, to support student success and campus operations.
  • Serve on university committees and participate in campus and system-wide initiatives as assigned.
  • Participate in safety committees and support campus safety initiatives in collaboration with Public Safety.
  • Maintain accurate records and data related to student engagement, housing operations, and program outcomes.
  • Keep abreast of current trends and best practices in residence life, student engagement, and higher education.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
