About The Position

The City of Waco is seeking an experienced public works leader to serve as the Assistant Director of Public Works. This role involves managing complex infrastructure operations, driving organizational improvement, and overseeing essential services that support mobility, public health, and quality of life. The Public Works Department delivers key services across Streets, Utilities, and Maintenance. The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Public Works and is expected to be a hands-on, operationally focused leader who can function independently within a complex organization. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in public works operations, particularly in utilities, streets, and maintenance, with proven experience in improving systems and processes, leveraging technology, and managing contracts and vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Five (5) years of progressive leadership experience
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in public works, utilities, or infrastructure maintenance
  • Strong background in contract management
  • Experience with operational modernization or technology systems

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Streets, Utilities, and Maintenance divisions
  • Lead operational improvements and modernization efforts
  • Implement an electronic work order system
  • Strengthen contract and vendor management
  • Build strong relationships with superintendents and frontline staff
