About The Position

This role is responsible for promoting a safe, cooperative, and professional healthcare environment to ensure optimum patient care. The Assistant Director of Plant Operations adheres to all hospital policies and procedures, prioritizing customer service and effectively communicating with patients, visitors, and co-workers. This position formulates and recommends policies and procedures to improve the hospital's physical plant and operations, assists in overseeing the installation and repair of utilities to meet safety and fire regulations, and provides inter and intra-departmental liaison services. The role involves preparing and reviewing engineering drawings, providing direct craft assistance in emergencies, and serving as the chief engineer responsible for all utility functions of the hospital. Key responsibilities include managing the custody and distribution of utilities, determining and approving technical requirements for utility service contracts, maintaining operating data, preparing utility reports, implementing energy conservation measures, and overseeing personnel assigned to utility functions. The role also involves managing a preventive maintenance system, implementing safety programs to detect and control hazards, and serving on the Environment of Care Committee. The Assistant Director must prioritize problems, establish schedules for subordinates, investigate new products and techniques in engineering and energy sustainability, and attend relevant meetings and seminars. Other duties may be delegated by the Senior Director.

Requirements

  • Associate or Baccalaureate degree in Engineering, Business or related areas or equivalent qualifications gained through Hospital experience as determined by the Senior Director.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of progressively responsible plant operations work.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years supervisory experience in category of Chief Engineer.

Nice To Haves

  • NYC High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineers license or NYC Refrigeration Systems Operating Engineers license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Make Customer Service a priority, treating customers in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact.
  • Formulate and recommend to the Senior Director, engineering services policies and procedures to improve the hospital physical plant and operation.
  • Assist in the overseeing of installation and repair of utilities for conformance with safety and fire regulations.
  • Assist in providing inter and intra departmental liaison and consultation services.
  • Prepare/review sketches, diagrams and detailed working drawings for engineering projects.
  • Provide direct craft assistance in an emergency situation and for areas requiring incumbent’s expertise.
  • Serve as the chief engineer responsible for all the operations of all the utility functions of the hospital.
  • Be responsible for custody and distribution of all utilities including heating hot water, steam, condensate, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, medical gas piping.
  • Determine and approve technical and engineering requirements of contracts for utility services.
  • Keep operating data, prepare utility reports, implement energy conservation measures and control personnel assigned for performing of utility functions.
  • Maintain the preventive maintenance system including keeping of records of all equipment and machinery.
  • Implement safety programs to detect, minimize and control fires and other safety hazards.
  • Serve on the Environment of Care Committee.
  • Decide upon the relative importance of numerous problems and establish schedules for routine duties of subordinates.
  • Investigate new products, techniques and procedures in engineering and energy sustainability fields and assist in establishing plans for improving department.
  • Attend safety meetings and other professional meeting and seminars.
  • Perform other duties as delegated by the Senior Director.
