About The Position

At Stony Brook Medicine, our Patient Access Assistant Director is responsible for operational functions which support the Revenue Cycle, Compliance and Patient Experience and directing staff in accurately and efficiently completing tasks in areas of Registration, Financial Screening and Insurance Verification, and Patient Throughput. Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills at various levels of the organization and across disciplines, will have knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence. The Assistant Director is a key member of the Patient Access Services team, responsible for overseeing the operational duties of Registration and Financial Services to ensure efficiency, quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction. Collaborates with the Director and area Senior Managers to manage employee relations, including staffing and recruitment, education of employees and engagement and ensures all policies and procedures are followed and all necessary documentation is completed thoroughly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 5 years’ experience in a hospital or healthcare revenue cycle administrative and/or supervisory capacity; or in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an Associate's Degree and minimum of 7 years of like experience.
  • Strong understanding of Revenue Cycle processes.
  • Experience in a high-volume registration, scheduling or financial clearance operation in an academic medical center or complex health system.
  • Knowledge of Managed Care, Governmental payor requirements.
  • Verification of degree (e.g., diploma or official transcript) is required for this role. Upload of documentation must be included with your application for consideration.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree, or Master’s candidate.
  • Revenue cycle system conversion or new application implementation experience.
  • Experience in identifying and implementing process improvement objectives and workflow redesigns.
  • Experience with Oracle, Cerner Millennium registration, patient accounting system.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director, Patient Access Services, in overseeing facility operations of Patient Access Inpatient and Outpatient Registration and Financial Services.
  • Ensures daily operations are maintained according to standard.
  • Provides support and resolution for facility and departmental issues.
  • Drives operational excellence and efficiency.
  • Supports operational activity to improve customer satisfaction and key performance metrics.
  • Works with the Director to ensure smooth integration and operational flow among registration and financial verification services, bed control and financial screening, achieved in collaboration with senior management in each of the various operational areas.
  • Supports efforts to align quality assurance review and financial screening review for efficiency (i.e. reducing number of “touches” to an account).
  • Ensures patient financial responsibility is communicated by staff accurately and professionally and POS payments are collected as appropriate.
  • Informs the Patient Access Director of any significant issues impacting the department.
  • Supports Director, Patient Access in overseeing management of department personnel and operations.
  • Manages staffing, recruitment and mentorship of employees.
  • Interviews, hires, evaluates and counsels Patient Access staff members for said areas.
  • Completes performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Trains new employees in all aspects of their assigned job.
  • Supervises and maintains the productivity of your employees.
  • Models visibility and accessibility to departmental leadership and staff, validating compliance and consistency of work flow across locations and shifts.
  • Reviews quality of patient registrations and documentation on a daily basis.
  • Ensures that policies and procedures are followed and patient accounts are completed in a thorough and timely manner.
  • Effectively manages Registration and Financial Services to ensure quality, productivity and customer service.
  • Ensures QA systems are being utilized to support registration integrity.
  • Implements and promotes excellent employee engagement, customer service, safety and financial goals.
  • Works closely and professionally with outside agencies on special projects developed by organizational administration.
  • Acts in the capacity of Department Leader in the Director’s absence.
  • Serves as the secondary liaison between Patient Access Services and the facility and leads the department in the absence of the Director.
