About The Position

Responsible for the planning, organizing, motivating and coordinating of nursing personnel in the nursing department to ensure all residents receive high-quality nursing care under the supervision of the Director of Nurses (DON). The DON will direct all nursing services provided to residents of the facility. This includes development and daily functioning, nursing care, staff training, communication with other departments, and coordination with medical staff. Additional responsibilities include the development of the departmental budget and the creation of nursing philosophies, objectives, policies, and procedures to enhance the department's functioning within the overall organization. Functions and tasks cover five major areas: Administrative, teaching, clinical, legal, and human relations.

  • Must be able to provide oversight of the medical records department.
  • Must be able to aid the unit charge nurse in emergency situations.
  • Must be able to monitor biohazard equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able to participate in the Infection Control Committee.
  • Must be able to coordinate staffing.
  • Must be able to oversee equipment safety and condition.
  • Must be able to assist with investigations of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of resident property.
  • Must ensure Nursing Practice meets standard guidelines.
  • Must ensure physician on call is notified of resident condition changes.
  • Must supervise and evaluate nursing personnel.
  • Must monitor charting by licensed nursing staff and certified nurse’s assistants.
  • Must oversee reporting of missing residents.
  • Must monitor employee accidents and incidents.
  • Must oversee room transfers and new admissions.
  • Must maintain participation in the facility on-call rotation.
  • Must provide after-hours telephone response and direction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of goals and objectives for the department in conjunction with the Administrator and physicians.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures for the department in keeping with the overall philosophies and objectives of the Home.
  • Assist with the development and/or the keeping of current policy and procedure manuals for the nursing department.
  • Assist with the keeping of goals, objectives, policies, and current procedures by assuring at least annual review and revision as necessary with the approval of administration.
  • Attend all management meetings and other coordinated meetings.
  • Meet individually with other department managers when necessary.
  • Serve as the liaison with the Pharmacy and keep the pharmacist updated on all changes in resident conditions/pay status/transfers/discharge.
  • Meet with Medical Director weekly after the MD visits the facility if the DON is unavailable.
  • Participate in the selection of prospective residents in terms of the nursing services needed and nursing competencies available to meet the needs of the resident.
  • Evaluate employee performance annually on facility forms.
  • Monitor productivity, regularly reviewing productivity for management reports related to nursing services.
  • Provide oversight of the medical records department for the facility.
  • Aid the unit charge nurse when transferring a resident out of the facility in emergency situations.
  • Monitor that all biohazard equipment and supplies are maintained in a safe and hazard-free environment.
  • Participate and chair the Infection Control Committee.
  • Coordinate staffing to ensure coverage under the supervision of the DON.
  • Oversee that all equipment is safe and in good working condition.
  • Assist with the investigation of any allegation of abuse, neglect, or the misappropriation of resident property.
  • Ensure that Nursing Practice meets standard guidelines according to the Standard of Practice for Nursing and according to facility protocol.
  • Ensure that the physician on call is notified when a resident’s condition changes.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of all nursing personnel under the direction of the DON.
  • Monitor all charting by licensed nursing staff and certified nurse’s assistants.
  • Oversee the reporting of any or all missing residents from the facility.
  • Monitor all employee accidents and incidents and report all such incidents as they occur to the DON.
  • Oversee room transfers and new admissions as announced by the Admission or Social Services.
  • Maintain participation in the facility on-call rotation and provides after-hours telephone response and direction in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Perform any other assigned duties as assigned by the DON and/or Administration.
