About The Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing at Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating nursing activities in collaboration with the Director of Nursing. This role involves managing a team of healthcare professionals, coordinating patient care with various medical and security staff, and serving as relief for the Director of Nursing. The position also includes providing training to staff, educating inmates on healthy lifestyles, and assisting in the implementation of evidence-based nursing procedures. The Assistant Director promotes a collaborative work environment, supports the mission of the VADOC Health Services Unit, ensures responsible use of resources, and may perform duties at other locations as needed.

Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-RN ex-am must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of healthcare management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, clinical supervision, and coordination of people and resources
  • Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to assess and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities
  • Working knowledge of Health Information Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA), American Correctional Association (ACA), National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), and Code of VA policies
  • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas effectively by word and in writing

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and coordinates nursing activities in collaboration with the Director of Nursing.
  • Manages and leads Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Nursing Assistants (CNA), Medical Records staff, and other assigned clinical staff.
  • Coordinates patient care with Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Dentists, Psychologists/Mental Health Clinicians, and security staff to ensure appropriate medical care for inmates.
  • Serves as relief for the Director of Nursing as needed.
  • Provides training to staff and delivers education to inmates on healthy lifestyles.
  • Assists in implementing and maintaining evidence‑based nursing procedures and guidelines for administrative and clinical functions.
  • Promotes a collaborative and efficient work environment focused on delivering high‑quality patient care.
  • Supports the mission of the VADOC Health Services Unit by promoting excellence in healthcare and the well‑being of individuals in custody.
  • Ensures responsible use of Commonwealth resources within the Health Services Unit.
  • Performs additional duties or assignments at other locations to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
